Canon 17-40mm ... Should I seriously consider eBay???

Hi

Im looking to buy a canon 17-40mm F4 as I do a lot of landscape and travel photography and just find the wide end of my 24-105mm limiting at times.

Best deals at the mo on camera price buster are coming in at about £550... but I must admit money is a bit tighter than i'd like at the mo.... and I have looked at them on ebay!

My problem is trusting someone on ebay with such a huge purchase... I've bought and sold plenty on ebay myself... even an old film EOS 3 and a few lenses... and if I thought the seller was as trustworthy as me i'd be ok... the problem is I read too many adverts and think... yeh a likely story... and then get suspiceous... I mean one fella on a current advert simply says he bought it for a project and then never used it... I cant imagine anyone forking out that much cash for a lens for a single project... then just not using it and having it sit on a shelve for a year...

Am I being over the top... should I try and save myself £200 on ebay... or should I go safe with a new purchase from a retailer... what are peoples thoughts???

you are quite well protected if you pay through paypal.

i have lenses from ebay and have had no problems, ask the seller if they take refunds if its not as described. If they are a decent seller they will accept that.

Have a look at Aperture Photographic in London they have a mint 2nd hand one in, and you will get six months warranty with it for £470

It was some time ago - but that is almost exactly what happened with my 17-40mm. Bought it specifically for a holiday, used it a few times, but since it was not the range for me I stopped using it. Didn't sell it for ages though - I bet it was a year.

Personally I think that is plausible.

Ebay can pay sometimes, i got a 24-70 2.8 with a hoya pro 1 d cpl and uv to go wth it for £740, but although you are well covered with paypal you pays your money and takes your chance!

I got one for £519 plus £8 postage RMSD 3 months ago from a relatively unknown Ebayer with 24 feedback. 2009 stock (lens date code), brand new and it was clear that it was. Brought over from Thailand...

Well pleased. Just had a good feeling about the seller despite low transaction count. Gut feeling

Does Kerso sell the 17-40? I assume he does. Maybe get in touch and see what his prices are.

The 17-40 is stunning. :)

Can fully recommend sigmas 15-30, great landscape & wide angle lens, cheap as well, £200 or less roughly if your lucky, mines v v sharp on my 5D

I used to have a sigma and didn't like it! def want the to 40 mm range though so when im doing landscape im not between lenses all the time! which I found with my previous combination!

He sells direct to members on here cheaper than he does in his Ebay shop (Kerso)

Contact him on Kerso1123@msn.com.

The price list he has just sent me lists that Lens at £515 plus delivery probably about £10

You can do a google on his name.

He is just down the road from you in Buchaven so you could collect.

I buy from ebay. If I am buying for a larger figure I am happy to travel 100 miles each way. Otherwise before transfering th emoney I ask for a BT telephone number and a house address. You can also get this detail from Ebay

Plenty of second-hand shops around on the net, and they will usually give you a 3/6/12 month guarantee.

See the classifieds here :)

Hey

Thanks for that... £580 is a fair price for that lens... but it really isn't the one im after sorry... def feel the extra 5mm at the tellephoto end would be a big thing for me. Save a lot less lens changes!

I hope you get a buyer soon!
