Canon 17-55 2.8 IS for portraiture

Hi guys just ordered today the above lens to start my quest in portraiture, how do you peeps rate this lens and hows it perform in this type of photography, Have i made the right choice? if anyone has any portrait examples with this lens i'd love to see them.

I would have got the 50mm 1.8 if it's just for portraiture but the one you've bought is obviously more flexible for other use and will be a big improvement on a kit lens.

What lens comes with a 40D out of interest, the same 18-55 you get on the xxxD series?
 
Think the 40D was bundled with the 17-85 IS, but might be wrong

Never used my 17-55mm for portraits, in fact just don't do them with any lens, can see no earthly reason why it wouldn't work though,

The 40d comes bundled with the 17-85 IS, when it was new

17-85 is your right, ive heard that the 17-55 on a 40d is virtually the same as the 24-70 2.8 on full frame, and people rave about the 24-70 as a portraiture lens on full frame.
 
You are going to get a shallower DOF on full frame, though I would have thought 55mm 2.8 would still give a nice shallow DOF for portraits on the 40D.
 
My favorite portrait lenses.. in order of how much I use them
- 70-200/2.8L IS II
- 85/1.8 (on 7D)
- 135/2L (on 5D)

Also have the 17-55/2.8 but I can't say it's a great portrait lens. 55mm @ f/2.8 will blur most of my backgrounds but not really throw them well out of focus. The 17-55 is however the greatest all-around lens you can throw on a crop sensor Canon and you will never regret getting one.

I would recommend the 85/1.8 to anyone on a budget without hesitation.
