Where's the best and cheapest place to get a hood for my canon 17-55 2.8 IS, Canon originals cost a fortune, so question is are the generic ones as good as the canon version and if so where to buy from?

There are some on Play.com for about £13. I had a third party one when I had my 17-55mm and it was fine. Always used to wonder why the Canon one was so extortionate.

You say expensive I got mine from Warehouse Express or £27.99 plus Delivery
I don't know if that is too much for you.

I think whether it's too much for him or not is not the point but that he doesnt see why a piece of moulded plastic is thirty quid and I kind of agree with him. I have both third party and canon hoods and tbh there isn't much difference. That of course depends on the third party one you buy. Ultimately any is better than none. Both will do the same job and also protect the front of the lens.

Cheers for the replys, ill have a scan on ebay see **** about, there's no way im spending £30 on a hood which should really be included with the lens at its retail price.

Have you tried your local high street? My high street camera shop sells some generic ones so at least you can see, touch and try.

If you dont mind waiting you can get really good copies of the genuine ones for 2 or 3 pounds on ebay from hong kong.

You should count yourself lucky- Canon lens + extortionate hood still costs less than overpriced Nikon lens with 'free' hood :lol:

I bought a generic one, b****r paying what canon want for a bit of plastic
 
Lens hood for my canon 17-55 2.8 IS has arrived, and must say its a superb fit and works very very well :)

How do you know that it "works very very well"? Have you noticed an improvement in your pics because I've never noticed any difference with or without hood? :shrug:

yep, i got one that came in a Canon box and was sold as genuine from ebay for £7.99 delivered from HK.
No idea if its fake or not (i suspect it is) but i compared it to the real deal my mate had and couldn't see any difference, it even had the felt lining.
This was about 3 years ago though but its definitely worth looking on ebay rather than paying full price for a Canon one IME.

When i first got my 17-55IS i was surprised at the amount of flare i would get, especially as my Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 didn't suffer from this. At first i was ready to send it back but after getting a hood ive hardly seen any flare. I feel that this lens definitely needs a hood to get the best IQ from it when the sun is strong (about 4-5 times a year over here ;-).
It has a very large front element and the hood definitely helps, plus it helps protect it from some knocks and bumps. I tend to keep the hood on all the time and hardly ever use a lens cap.

I also get mines from ebay. Does the same job and fits perfectly at a fraction of cost.
