I take my 60D and 600D up mountains with a wee Canon EF-S 18-55 EFS. A £40 repair of the 17-85 sounds like a better option than me worrying about an expensive lens getting bashed about in my rucksack!!
Think about all those images that would look better with good glass; or maybe that isn't priority? Maybe a camera bag that costs more than £25 would solve the other issue?
I dropped mine a few years ago and the focusing was a bit iffy (Worked fine in manual mode). The shop (Camera centre Swansea) charged me £120 for the complete repair. The problem is the lens will never be worth a massive amount of money, after the repair you will probably be able to sell it on here for £100 ish maybe a bit more. The alternative is you could look at picking up a 24-105 second hand here.
