Hi,
My Canon 17-85mm IS USM lens developed the Err 01/communications lost error a while back, which gradually got worse until it was unusable at anything greater than 24mm and the aperture anything other than fully open.
Following Canon's advice, I took it to their authorised service centre in Glasgow, who diagnosed it as a faulty iris/flexi cable and are repairing it for around £120 (it's not long out of warranty). I asked Canon if they'd contribute, but they politely declined.
I'm wondering though...is there anything I can do to prevent the fault reoccurring, or was I just unlucky with the one I got, and/or does anyone know if the new component(s) are redesigned so that they are less likely to fail?
Thanks,
Iain
PS I found this repair video on YouTube... I'll try most things, but this seems quite involved! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb1opb_Bw6M

I doubt they'd be interested now that it's been dealt with, but I've never had cause to approach them before.
