I have a 500D with the 50mm F1.8. Now looking for an all round walkaround lens thats fairly wide and long. The 17-85 and 28-135 seem to fit the bill. Is one better than the other?

I like the sounds of the 15-85 but prices are huge, also in consideration is the 18-135, but so far no reviews have appeared of this lens.

I have the 28-135 and like it a lot. I have taken some (what i consider) very nice sharp shots with it and i would only sell it to upgrade to a L lens in the future (when i win the lottery!) There is a group for this lens on Flickr. Not used the 17-85 but i'm guessing it will be similar quality. I guess it just depends on which end you want more, Wide or zoom.

I'm more than happy with the 17-85 and the range suits as all round landscape lens.

I would at least wait for the reviews on the 2 new lenses.

Review on the 17-85 are not that good, but there seems to be lots of people who are happy with it.

I think 28-135 has a bit better IQ than 17-85 (not 100%) but it may not be wide enough for landscape shots on a crop.

Range of the 17-85 is very handy, and it's quite small and light. Plus IS. It's nice to use. It's cheap now, too, and if you use Canon's DPP Raw processor to sort out its shortcomings I think you'll be well pleased. Have a look at the demo pics here http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/canon_17-85_4-5p6_is_usm_c16/page3.asp

New 15-85 is going to be wonderful, but pricey.

not keen on the 17-85 but it's a nice easy lens to use
the range is great but at 17mm it's very bowed (not technical I know. but the verticals converge a LOT!)

wide AND long... is compromise. a know a few people that like 18-200mm lenses but I prefer to break up the range a bit

The Tamron 17-50mm always gets good words spoken about it, just bought a Sigma 17-70mm which is also popular if its a good example

Those new lenses sound nice, but as you say rather pricy

I think the OP is talking around about the £200 mark so a few of the lenses mentioned are out. I have nbever tried the 17-85 but i have owned the 28-135 and i liked it alot. I only sold it to fund a portrait lens which was far superior in IQ but then you are talking about a mid range zoom. It is a good lens though.
