canon 17-85MM EF S USM IS

Looking for some advice i have a canon 400d and currently have a sigma 17-70mm 2.8 have been looking at buying the canon 17-85mm EFS USM IS lens

will this work fine on my 400d ? and whats the image quality like compared to the sigma

any advice welcome

I don't think it'll really an improvement over the sigma.

The 17-85 gets reviewed as average, but the older non-OS sigma 17-70 seems to have a very good reputation.

If you want an upgrade, have a look at the canon 15-85 IS. It's got an extremely good reputation for providing great image quality and a brilliant general purpose focal length range.
Not sure exactly how it's compares with the sigma though.

As mentioned above, your Sigma is far better than the Canon 17-85 ;)

I've owned both and the Sigma is sharper, better contrast and colour. Only thing it lacks will be IS and HSM if it's the earlier model.

Part of the problem with the 17-85 seems to be though that it was very overpriced when first released, for £200 used today it looks like decent value to me.

Seems like it would be a sideways step to me, losing some sharpness and appature for more range and IS.
 
I haven't used the Sigma but I spontaneously bought one of the 17-85mm Canons a few months back when I needed a new zoom lens in a hurry, and I've actually been surprisingly pleased with it. It's hardly a fantastic lens but it's a massive improvement over the kit lens that I'd been previously using. However, considering the Sigma you currently own, I'm not sure if the 17-85mm will really be of much use to you - I agree with squishy's suggestion to investigate the 15-85mm, as I've seen some really good images from it.

Having said that, if it's additional range that you're after, perhaps you should be looking for a telephoto lens to complement your Sigma.
 
The 17-85mm will be fine on a 400D, but why do you want to replace the Sigma?
 
The Siggy is a brilliant lens. I've had one on my 400D when I was a Canon man. Certainly wouldn't change it for the 17-85.
 
As advised, if you can afford it I would go for the 15-85mm lens. I have had a 17-85 in the past and found it to be reasonably good, I certainly didn't have any complaints but it didn't blow my socks off either!!
 
I have a 17-85 and think it's a nice lens. Better than the kit lens IMO. It's all down to price though I guess. The 17-85 is approx 200 quid cheaper than the 15-85 for example.

I have just got a 17-70 non OS and it is really really good. I had one about 4 years ago when I got my 1st DSLR and I had forgotten just how good it is. I really thought I would need the OS version but it seems I am reasonably capable of getting steady sharp shots without it.
