Canon 18-135mm Lens hood.....which one?

The Canon lens hood for this lens seems a little pricing for what it is. There are loads of non-canon ones about but most seem to screw into the lens end (like a filter does) rather than over the top which is what my Sigma lens hood does.

Anyone got any tips on not paying canon prices or getting a good deal?

I got mine from amazon for not much? Avoid ones that screw into the filter thread at all costs! Firstly it'll likely damage the filter thread if dropped which will be expensive to repair and secondly it loses a lot of strength which may cause the element or barrel damage if impacted.

The genuine article (and some copies) have a bayonet fitting which is what the lens is designed for.

I'd go for the genuine article. It's going to be a compromise anyway because any lens hood that is being asked to adequately shield what is a reasonable wide angle lens to a short telephoto just has to be. But at least the Canon one will have been designed as the best compromise and will fit correctly.

The Canon hood is not a compromise as it's designed for the lens, there's no vignetting at any focal range and works perfectly.

I take your point Jim, but I'd still argue that any lens hood for a zoom lens has to be a compromise of sorts

On the other hand a lens hood for a prime lens can be designed to perfectly cater for that particular focal length.

I certainly wouldn't get a hood that screws into the filter. Get the bayonet fitting one. If you do go for an aftermarket one, ensure the inside is a matt finish (genuine Canon ones tend tone flock lined)
