Canon 18-55 & 55-250 or Sigma 18-250??

I have had my Canon 450D for about 2 years now and still have the kit lens (18-55 IS). I also have the 55-250 IS.

I have been looking into the possibility of selling these two lenses and buying a lens that will cover all or virtually all of this range. The lens I am most interested in at the moment is the Sigma 18-250 f3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM.

Basically I wondering is whether the Sigma lens would be an upgrade on the two Canon lenses or whether it would be more of a side-step with the only bonus being that I would only have to carry one lens?? :shrug:

That's the route I went, although still have the two Canon starter lenses.

Pretty sure what is gained in convenience (i.e. not swapping lenses) is lost with IQ, specifically sharpness at the 250 end.

Still tend to use the Sigma over the Canon lenses though

It find it hard to see how the sigma lens could be any sharper, more likely it'll be softer. Only reason to have it instead would be if you really can't carry both lenses (they're really not that big or heavy) or really don't want to change lenses (if you're going somewhere very dusty for example).
