Yes
I have both versions of the lens, an 18-55 kit lens and the IS version

I am struggling to get an acceptable shot with the IS lens
IMO it is a bit fuzzy

How do I go about getting the lens checked out?

I am based in North London near the Canon Service Centre
Can anyone take a lens in or does it have to go via a dealer?

Post one of the problem pictures on here, with technical details, and it should be possible to see if it's likely to be user error or not.

If it's not then identical side by side comparison pictures with the two lenses should reveal any fault.

Then you just take it in to Canon yourself.

I can't see where the spec states if it's an IS or Non-IS lens used on either picture.

I would hazard a guess that image 13 is the IS lens ?

The Shutter speed and aperture are significantly different, yet they are both at 400ISO.

with the 400d you are going to find some noise when zooming into the detail of the pictures....

I've got both and haven't noticed any significant diffs...

Maybe try a control experiment......... Use a tripod same subject / same lighting / same settings.... that'll highlight any immediate issues...

I might have a quick play myself :D

....using something that doesn't move ;) and doesn't answer back :D

Tripod used for both and a 430ex bounced off the ceiling ETTL - I only detached/attched lens

Thanks for the feedback.

Both images were taken using the same IS lens

Thanks for posting the comparative images. There is certainly better clarity and less shadowing using the IS.

I'll take some pics tomorrow and if there is a noticeable difference I will pop along to Canon. I'll call them for servicing prices anyway - I am curious now

Canon quoted £50 for a checkup of the lens
I can pick up a new one for 'not much more'

I have checked and the ISO was the issue

Clear at 100, great at 200, okay at 400 etc so will make a conscious effort to shoow lower ISO when zoom / crop needed

Just back from Berlin and viewing pics on my Vaio instead of my Dell monitor and all the issues have gone.

A quick screen calibration soon sorted out the issues and the images are definitely clearer on the IS.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions last week.
