Does anyone know how significant the difference is between these 2 lenses? Is it worth replacing the mk 1, which came with my 500D, with the mk 2?

Thanks Mark, mine is the non-IS version but it's not getting used and I could do with having that extra little bit of versatility in my bag
 
Thanks for your feedback, I found the IS version on MPB and traded in my non-IS lens, it should be here in a day or 2 :) (and I managed to save a huge amount of money compared to new which is always a bonus)
 
Here's a couple of pics for comparison - the first taken with the non-IS lens and the second the IS version. They're not completely like for like but both taken at 55mm in Aperture priority straight from camera

I do have a couple of other lenses, I normally use my 50mm and my 100mm but thought it would be handy to have the flexibility of the 18-55 for as and when without spending much money. I have a couple of very trusting friends so will be having a play with a 10-20 and a 70-200 during the next couple of weeks :D
 
I like the IS but I don't like the kit lens(18-55mm EFS IS) at all. It seems very soft to me unless I just have a bad example.
I would hold on and save your pennies for a "proper" upgrade.
