Canon 18-55 or nifty 50 ?

Hello all.
I have decided to buy a used Cannon to try them out for myself.
I have the choice of a 30d or a 450d i think either will be ok, the question is do i get the 18-55 kit lens or the nifty fifty? It will just be for general photography just to try the Cannon out.

I know almost zero about Canon cameras, but I assume those are both crop sensor bodies.

If so I think you'll find 50mm to be a bit long.

You could perhaps consider a 35mm fast lens as and alternative to the zoom.

it's an unanswerable question- both are 2 totally different lenses capable of totally different things

the 18-55 won't work in low light, and the 50mm will be too 'zoomed in' most of the time.
My advice, get the sigma 30mm 1.4
 
Hmm - 450D is a pretty good 'starter' body which offers Liveview over the 30D, BUT I found I outgrew my 350D pretty quickly and moved to a 20D (which is pretty much the same transition as 450D to 30D)

That said I moved from my 20D to a 30D pretty quickly and have stuck with it for years now. So I guess it depends on how long you're willing to persevere with DSLR over say bridge or compacts cameras??

Regarding lenses, well I'd suggest going for the 50mm over the zoom as it forces you to look at composition over just zooming to get the framing right (although I started on an 18-55 :) )

From my own experience, I got a 450d as my first dslr (and I still have it). I think it is a great starter point and paired with an 18-55 is going to let you experiment more than the 50mm. The 50 is very cheap and as you progress you may find that you want one. I still use my 18-55 now and it can give really good results. So my advice would be to go with the 450d and the 18-55.

I am going to get the kit lens as it will give me more versatility to start with, and if i decide to progress with the Cannon further i can always get more lenses.

I started out with a 550D and gave it to the wife after around 10 months. It's a great starter camera and will be fairly similar to the 450D. I then got a 7D and a 5D2 and the difference in build quality and ergonomics is amazing. I've now got a 5D3 and a 60D and I wont be going back to a xxxD body.
The 30D will be more solidly built, will have a better feel and the wheel on the back and top LCD are a godsend. I've got so used to that type of layout I find it difficult to use the 550D without the wheel now.
Both are crop sensors so the 50 will more than likely seem a little bit long for an only lens so I would suggest the 18-55 IS to start with. It's a good lens for the price and will give you a good range. However, if your budget allows you should look for a similar focal length lens with a constant f2.8 aperture as that will help greatly in low light.

Just as a update I bought a Canon 30d with 18-55is lens. it feels so much better than my d40x but will take time to get used to it.
If anyone has any 30d tricks and tips let me know.

Congratulations Paul, the 30D is a good sturdy piece of kit that should keep you occupied for a while :)
