I used to have the 100mm macro (NOT "L") and it's an excellent lens but I then started experimenting with using telephoto zooms and found it was such a versatile way of working I sold my 100mm and bought the Canon 70-300mm L IS USM lens - used with my Kenko automatic extension tubes it doubles as a perfect macro lens and, of course, an excellent telephoto zoom as well.
