You togs that have had this object of desire for some months now, what are your thoughts?

Good, bad, worth the pennies?

I am particularly interested in the auto focus and high ISO results.

Desperately hoping for some mediocre reviews here....I'm feeling weak :(

Don't really have time for a large review at the moment but bottom line is I am chuffed with the camera. I can't comment on high ISO stuff as I rarely go above 800 anyway but I'm sure others have experience.

I moved from a 1DsII to a 1DIV as my main camera. Basically, it offers a very similar resolution to the 1Ds but coupled with 10fps and a much deeper buffer (23 RAW rather than 9) They were the reason for picking the camera and for those it benefits it is exactly what I was expecting.

Image quality and AF took me longer to get my head around but I have just had a weekend where the camera has amazed me. I think it just took me time to get it set up right and also for me to understand how it works properly and how to get the best out of it for my needs.

It is the best camera I have used to date and 7500 frames in I am now very chuffed with it. The biggest single annoyance I have is that Spot-AF (which I got used to on the 7D) can only be accessed by the buttons on the end of a big prime (which you can't always reach from inside a hide)

My work colleague bought one a few weeks ago... he had a MkIII beforehand (and about every other Canon digital body ever made).

His opinion is:

Pros:

Superb depth of detail and colours
High sustainable frame rate
Decent resolution for cropping

Cons:

Low light AI servo focus fails spectacularly (single shot works strangely)

On the con, and there is only one, he is talking to Canon CPS. He's on the second copy already with it gone back to Canon for further eval. I could go into all the tests etc he's done with it, but he's no newbie to cameras and surprised even CPS at that.

Which is a shame really as this promised to be the best action camera yet made, it really did.

Can you not use the joy stick? On the mk3 you cant find the centre AF point using the wheels, you have to use the joystick to navigate to the centre. This irritates the hell out of me. You can also set preset points, so you could set the preset to the centre point.

That's single AF point. I'm talking about Spot-AF which is a new mode on 7D and 1DIV only which decreases the size of the AF point allowing more precise AF

Coming from the 20D to the MKIIN then the MKIII and now the MKIV i cant fault it at all,im not a pro tog but have some friends that work for some publications that think its the best Canon made so far.

Any problems with A/F etc will probably be fixed via firmware upgrade as so far only one update released for SERVO/AF tracking which you can find the details out about on Canon's site. The MKIII had loads of problems with A/F but in all fairness this was sorted with the Sub Mirror assembly and firmware and to be honest after that the A/F was spot on.

High ISO performance to me is amazing although from what i hear still very slightly behind that of the Nikon's and that came from a Canon Rep.

If you are a CPS member you can get one on loan for a couple of days to have a play with then make your mind up but if your anything like me i did not want to take it back and brought one the end of the first day i had it on trial.

It loses out on the ISO performance because of it's sensor size and pixel density.. it's swings and roundabouts!

Rumour has it though that the price will be dropping once the to-be-announced 1DSIV hits the shelves so it might be an idea to hold on for a short while!

Very pleased with mine. For what I do the ISO argument versus the D3 is fairly neutral as the 1DIV produces stonking images at 6400, and I have never needed to go above that on a floodlit sports pitch. It is well ahead of the 1DIII in this regard. The extra croppability from the higher number of pixels however is a massive bonus, and gives really useful effective range extension over the 1DIII.

Focus is better than the 1DIII. Lock on with a 300 2.8 is so fast it's hard to believe. It tracks very well.

Image quality is fab - definite improvement over the 1DIII again.

Lots of nice little features including the focus point orientation change between landscape and portrait modes.

Oh, not that I use it much, but the video is just stunning, especially with wide aperture lenses.
