Canon 1d Mk3 LP-E4 battery problem? HELP!

Yes
Finally, finally got my 1D Mk3 tonight and all kinds of problems, one of which is sorted: bought from the States via Kerso, the externally supplied UK adapter only had a 1 amp fuse which popped as soon as I put it on the mains adapter and plugged it into the battery socket on the camera.

Bought a new UK travel adapter and the camera works OK with the mains adapter.

The problem I am left with is that although the battery charger lights up and appears to be charging, after 2 hours I tried the battery in the camera and it only lasted 10 minutes.

Put it back on charge and the three green lights flash in 5 second intervals then show 80% charged. When I hold the display button down, it indicates the battery is 100% charged.

When inserted in the camera, as dead as a dodo and no short red light on the camera as it is inserted.

I don't know if it is a duff battery or a problem with the charger.

I don't get any red lights on the charger indicating the need for calibration.

My question to 1d Mk3 owners is, should all three lights be be going out for a second in 5 second intervals when charging?

The manual says something about the battery being out of it's temperature operating range when this happens.

Do I have a duff battery or a duff charger?

It's not like I can go and pick a battery up from Tesco for a couple of quid to verify it.

The green LED's (1,2 or 3) should be on solid when everything's okay and the battery's charging. If the LED's are blinking then it indicates that charging is suspended until correct conditions return.
I seems that either your charger or battery isn't happy.....is there anyone close-by who could lend you a battery or charger to eliminate one or the other (don't know your location)

Bob

Just a thought (I'm at work just now so can't see the charger to check): What voltage does the charger expect as input? ie are the Chargers themsleves 120v or 240v specific?

You might have to invest in a transformer to step down 240 to 120... A quick check on the label on the back of the charger should confirm.

Also, if you get any life in the battery try checking the Battery Info in camera for more info.

All three green lights flashing shows charging and battery has no charge.

When inserted in the camera, as dead as a dodo and no short red light on the camera as it is inserted.
After 2hrs charging this is worrying.

When charging the green lights flash on & off constantly. When solid green light shows indicates % of charge ie 50% or 80%.

BTW my charger is LC-E4 not LP-E4 as you describe.

Thanks for the replies :)

The charger operating voltages are 100v-240v (as is the AC-E4 AC adapter) so no issues there.

The battery has a temperature control circuit built in and charging is suspended if it detects out of range (the battery isn't running hot)

I've ordered a replacement from Park Cameras which should be with me tommorrow. If that works, fine.I'll get Kerso to organise a replacement.

If it's the charger, I'll presumably have 2 good bateries and Ian can organise a replacement charger.

I just hope the whole lot doesn't have to go back, I've been waiting since end of April for it and am going to have to cancel a double portrait shoot with this weekend as the deadline :'(

I can use indoors OK on the AC Adapter so presumably that rules out the camera body.

Things are looking promising.
Received a new battery today and it appears to be charging normally with no light flashing sequence on the charger.

Going to put it in the body in an hour and play with it the rest of the night to make sure the body isn't FUBARing the batteries.

Just waiting for the second phone call today from Kerso even though he is on holiday who assured me whatever it takes, everything will be sorted.

Great quality control Canon, you plonkers :nono:

Anyone know when Kerso is back from holiday?

I received a cryptic email last Thursday from him after sending him a large sum of money and I wished he'd mentioned that before he went away as I've still not got a delivery date.

Ian has been to Ireland for the weekend, then he is in Scotland for another week.
I expect he will be back in the States next weekend.

He is coming to my house one day this week so I will show him this thread.
I think his sister in Fife is looking after orders in progress though.

Thank you Bachs,

I did not anticipate this delay as we're going on holiday
ourselves shortly - hence the panic, and we'd like to take the
new gear with us. So are keen to get a delivery date.

I'll hopefully hear from Ian's sister.

Might be worth doing the "recondition" thing on your original battery. There's a button on the charger that will discharge the battery completely and then recharge it.

Hi Tobert,

You can only run the RECALIBRATE function when the red light is on the charger.

The new battery I ordered has been hammered over the last few days using live view, the LCD back light and anything else I could think of to stress the battery and is still showing 68% so the problem was definitely a duff battery.

Kerso is going to replace the original battery which will be used as a spare, so happy days!
