Hi, i have just recieved i a 1d mkii n ,i have been through the menu and set up my desired settings,having now just fitted my 100-400mm to try, i can pick centre point focus by holding down shutter and turning thumbwheel ,i then try to focus and it is not focousing or locking on ,could any one help as to what i may not be doing correct ,Thanks
 
Obvious question first - have you got AF switched on at the lens ?

Secondly - what focus mode (AI Servo etc) have you got selected ?
 
Hi, yes AF selected on lens ,one shot and single centre point focus,getting concerned something is not quite right ,i can manualy focus but in AF no blinking light to confirm focus or no focus .

Is it actually focussing despite no light up AF point or audible beep in one shot ?

Custom Function - C.Fn-10 (on 1D2 at least) could be switched off ?

Have you got both on/off switches turned on ?

Hi, no focusing ,just not locking on to anything ,its actualy very sunny here at the moment so no light problems and no green light at all
 
Is the back focus button active?
 
Now this could be me, i have been so used to 50D and just taking the shutter half way down to achieve focus,now on the 1d mkiin it seems i have to hold down the wb assist button and at the same time press the shutter button half way down to lock on , is this the only way ,i know i have upgraded but i have to explain this to my wife ,looks like i will have to get another 50d for her only......ps i have just been through the manual and it states that pressing the shutter button halfway activates auto focusing , which i am not getting .

It sounds like its focusing using the back button (as it should if its been setup that way - mine is).
Custom function - CF4 I think needs to be disabled - bit difficult without camera to hand.

Half press should work how you're expecting it to in that it should AF, light up, beep.

It will so long as the rear button focusing isnt activated, that will completely disable the shutter button from focusing, althoug hI recall IS still works on either/both buttons when rear focus is active. I suggest the reset button and go back to factory defaults, manual sent to e-mail address.

The rear button allows you to lock focus by depressing the small button at the back, getting the lens into focus, then let go (and focus stays locked to the original point) recompose if required or stop it focusing on something about to walk across the main image and causing it to try and re-focus (which if there's a long distance between original item and new image can cause a long delay as the lens hunts back and forth). Shutter then is used to lock AE and take the shot only, many pros use this.
I'm playing with it on both my cameras but tbh I dont really like it.

It might be worth resetting the camera to factory settings. That should clear any custom functions that have been setup by the previous owner.
