Hi guys,

considering swapping my 5d for a 1d mkii, mainly for use at weddings and events but have a few questions that the boffins on here will no doubt be able to answer:

1. How would the low light capability stack up against the 5d?
2. What difference would the crop of the sensor have on image quality?
3. How much better (or worse) would the AF be on the 1D?
4. Any negatives for the switch?

Iain

I've recently switched the other way so any other questions ask!

1 - The 5D does seem to be able to handle higher ISO better.
2 - The 5D produces much better images of static subject (see Q3).
3 - The AF on the 1D wipes the floor with the 5D. If what you are shooting moves fast it will more than negate the FF loveliness from the 5D.
4 - The 1D is a heavy beast and the menu system isn't that intuitive.

I've both and the previous answers pretty much nails it, so I wont add on the "technical" side.

If I had to keep just one camera I couldnt make up my mind.

The FF IQ is lovely, its not sharper or more detailed just "Better" in a subliminal way.
The 1D is still awesome and bullit proof so will take knocks better but I'd be hard pressed to say which is the better camera or which one I'd prefer.

Bear in mind your lens lengths will chane due to the 1.3 crop, which for you may be a good or bad thing, you'll lose a bit of wide angle but gain a bit of length.
The 1D can write to 2 cards simulataneously so you have instant back-up, the 5D doesnt. I've also noticed my 5D writes jpegs only when the battery gets low (or it seemed to yesterday - anyone else noticed that?)

I forgot the point about the 2 card slots, that is very useful, I just left an 8GB SD card in there as backup, that way there was always a card in there.
