Popping across the pond shortly....exchange rate isn't bad so should I treat myself to a brand spanking new 1Ds MK3 for £3900??

Just remember if you pic one up in a store they will charge you sales tax, NY is about 8%
 
Hard to smuggle down your trousers, and if you get caught you'll get clobbered.
 
And it'll be back to the US of A for any warranty work.
 
Not worth the risk IMO. Heathrow for instance has experts for just about every kind of imported product. As a friend of mine found out to his cost, they've even got a carpet boffin - and he can tell you the exact shop in Egypt you bought your nice, new, handmade rug from! And how much you really paid for it.

A carpet isn't exactly the sort of thing you'd bring on holiday though ;)
 
Why not shop around in the UK, im sure somewere will able to match that price.

I was lucky when i got mine, i got the body only and 2 batteries for £2500 from a shop in london, it was ex display model. Alot of people have told me it was pot luck i got it but ive seen ones going on ebay for same price, ex display.
 
PM Kerso on here, he will import one for you, pay all the taxes etc and it will still be cheaper than UK retail or internet.

You can even get it repaired in the UK as he supplies UK invoice.

Just do a search on here to find lots of satisfied customers.

I know.:)

My idiot friend got caught trying the old 'adjusted-receipt' trick - i.e. he paid 'X' hundred for the rug and got the Egyptian seller to give him another receipt for 'Y' hundred (where Y was a fifth of X). Heathrow's carpet expert told him the exact name of the shop and the exact figure for X!!

It's all about the gamble really isn't it............. and I am NOT condoning smuggling / avoiding duty / VAT etc............ though I would imagine some things are easier than others........:shrug:

A friend of a friend of one of my golfing buddies may at one stage did something similar - but took out an old crappy set of irons - which he then dumped, picked up a whole new bag worth of gear .... this was when about $2 to £1 - and the states is pretty much dollar to pound price for golf gear......... i.e. $300 or £300 so made a hell of a saving............ used them out there and then came back......... all was well.

I came back from SA once with a few too many bottles of wine in the cases - and whilst not crime of the century - would have been liable for a few quid. So went up to the customs guy and asked him for directions to the car hire place in the other terminal.............. all was well.

I guess if the purpose of the visit was a family holiday more likely a camera would not be picked up etc etc.........but if you were to be going on business for a few days, then it might seem an odd thing (to a customs officer) for a businessman to take with him...........(unless you are a pro tog!)

so £3700 + sales tax........ up against £4800 (cheapest on camerapricebuster...)

I'd have a check with UK as mentioned above first before I considered it.......

Basically liable (if stopped) for VAT @ 17.5% and Customs / Excise duty which varies according to country and goods... anything from 0% to 85%...... and I would also suggest a possible fine for being naughty and a little flag on your file to say "naughty boy - check him thoroughly"

No it won't Jim, there's a reciprocal agreement across the pond...

but why not get a good 2nd hand one for about £2500....I love mine, it's a belter of a body, used it all over the world.

I can't understand HMRC's logic - on some goods it doesn't seem to make any sense at all.

There's no import duty on a body but there is duty on tripod gear (RRS BH-55 head & various L-plates). I phoned HMRC before ordering and they asked what kind of metal the BH-55 was made of. :shrug: Work that one out!

For info: in the end - the RRS invoice totalled $874 USD (US tax exempt). On landing in the UK, import duty was £19.79, vat was £83.23 and the Parcelforce clearance fee was £13.50.
