I recently purchased a a 1Ds3 in mint condition with low actuations. Although being entirely happy with the camera I was intrigued as to its age. After a long time searching with Google I came upon a forum that gave me the details in one of the postings.....
In the bottom of the battery compartment, printed in white is a date code that is similar to the one on a Canon lens. The code was OW0405 which meant it was manufactured in Oita, Japan in 2008 in the month of April (the last 2 digits do not seem to mean anything). I checked my 1D4 which I bought new and that seemed to be accurate.
I hope this will help anyone with a 1D series Canon who is curious as to its age.
Paul.
