Canon 1DmkIV owners

I have only had my 1DmkIV for a week and am certainly still learning about how to best use it.

One thing I am finding a little strange is that images look kind of soft/slightly out of focus on the LCD screen but look better on my computer. I don't remember this happening on my 7D. Is this what others find when viewing images on the LCD?

I am also noticing that I have to use a higher shutter speed that normal to overcome camera shake. I think this is due to the higher pixel count that the 1DmkIII I had (read that somewhere) so I am not too worried about this.

it was the same with the 450D I used to own, and is the same also with my 1Ds. All you're seeing is the embedded JPEG in the image which is really just there so you can check composition etc. It is not a wholly accurate representation of the final image quality.

I rarely bother checking the LCD unless I genuinely think I buggered up the shot.

Will adding a touch more sharpness to the jpeg in the picture style menu make it a little sharper?


Any way you look at it at least the screen on the mkIV is miles ahead of the one on the mkIII.

Imagers look good on my screen and not shot higher shutter speeds than I did before and everything is fine, but I did read somewhere about using higher speeds to get the best out of it.This camera is amazing.

The only time that I can envisage a higher shutter speed (than a MkIII) giving improved results is if you intend to crop more in post based on the increased detail that the MkIV may have been captured.

When an AI Servo AF photo of a moving subject is viewed on a computer display and the photo seems to be slightly
unsharp, it is incorrect to assume that a focusing issue is always the cause of the problem. Even in photos shot with a fairly
fast shutter speed, the lack of sharpness could be a result of subject movement or camera shake. This is particularly relevant
to the EOS-1D Mark IV because even small levels of motion blur are noticeable at 100% magnification due to the camera’s
16.1 megapixel resolution.

On the mkIII with the 17-40 I could get sharp shots at 40mm with shutter speeds around 1/40-1/80. With the 24-70 on the mkIV at 40-70mm I can't really get a tack sharp image at anywhere near the same shutter speeds. I admit these are low shutter speeds but sometimes it all you can use in certain situations.

EOS-1D Mark IV – faster shutter speed needs

As the resolution of cameras increases, and pixel sizes decrease, you may find that there is a need to use faster shutter speeds. The smaller pixels in cameras mean that any slight subject movement during the exposure is more likely to show up as subject blur – this is because it doesn’t have to move as far to affect more pixels. To avoid this just use a faster shutter speed than you would previously have done. For example, if you previously used 1/500sec, you could now try using 1/1000sec or faster.

There is an article on the Canon site regarding setting the jpeg levels higher as these effect the previews for RAW files as it displays the jpeg on screen as mentioned earlier in this post,will see if i can find it.
