had my 1dmkiv exactly one yr yesterday.. today i get error 30 which is shutter problems... good job its 2 yr warranty :)
 
no idea how many shutter but will get canon to do a count.. its 52 weeks averaging at least 3 jobs a week i guess.. cricket over summer.. its gonna be a hundred thousand+ i guess
 
Ouch, good thing the 1-series get 2 year warranties. Still rubbish although I'm sure you've done a fair few clicks on it but I doubt nowhere near the 300k.

My MkIII has 4897 from just under a year of use, although showing off the 10FPS in the beginning probably cost me a few of those.
 
well it went this morning but forgot to add in the letter for a shutter count..

best scenario would be it returned under warranty with a brand new shutter... so clicks = 0 :)
 
Ouch. Lucky that you got the second one as back up then! :D

My 7D went down the Err30 followed by a final Err40 one month before the warranty ran out, and ended up with two new circuit boards as well as a new shutter, so there is a positive side!
 
damn, sorry to hear that...I take it it gets put to good use regularly ?

Would be interested to see the shutter actuations, its good for 200k isn't it ?
 
Just out of interest Kipax, with your kit and profession I take it you are a CPS member. Does that mean everything gets done for you a lot quicker or courtesy bodies or something?

Sorry its something I've heard about but never found anyone to ask.

CPS cover is offered on a tiered level system, Depending on how much qualifying kit you actually own and more importantly registered on the system.

Turnaround on the top tier (Platinum) is 2 day turn around...If the fix will take longer, loan kit can be made available.

I have not had to use it but it is a great facillity that Canon provide.

I am on GOLD .. I would needd another pro body to be on Platinum.. So I get a 3 day turnaround which is good.

Yes my equipment gets a LOT of use.. shutter is supposed to be 300 thousand plus.. but they are only a guideline..No camera is ever guaranteed to make the shutter count listed wiht the camera..

I can do 2 or 3 football matches a week plus lots of midweek work.. Over summer I have all day shooting tounraments or cricket.. On sunday when it started to error I was part way through 33 bouts of kickboxing.. So you can imagine the use it gets :)
 
well i got my confirmation from canon this morning reciept of camera and under charge key it says warranty-inland

so thats step one sorted:)

If its a 2yr warranty why would there be any doubt? Curious that's all as I would expect Canon to honour the warranty unless you had dropped it, or something that could be described as outside of warranty T&C's.

Because i wasnt too sure if the shutter dying comes under warranty... all dslrs have a shutter life..its a gudeline and as far as i know its not guranteed... so had an ikle worry at back of mind..

Amazed a shutter wouldnt be guaranteed :( but bow to your greater knowledge.

i got a text message from canon at 5.30pm today saying my camera is ready for shipping.. so presume send in morning i will get thursday.... fingers crossed :)

Nope.. forgot to ask in the covering letter... just a bit flustered... having had no problems for as long as I can remember... in one day I got the camera broke.. sky router broke (using a dongle since sun night) and the oil emptied out of my car because i didnt put the dipstick back in all the way... dipstick being the oprative word... new sky routers should be here in morn... camera should be here thur and car has oil and going for a ful service thur...

So alls well now but was a bit iffy when wrote the letter.. kicking myself now of course :(
 
If you sent it to Elstree then it's almost certain that they made a note of the shutter count as part of the repair process. If they did then it's kept on record so you can just phone them up and ask.

always send to elstree nowerdays.... good call on the count and it stands to reason i guess.... i think I will fire off an email right now see if i get a response:)
 
Camera back 5 mins ago so nice and early..Sent monday morning.. Back Thur morning.. I have a cup final to cover tonight..

My 1dmkIV that I have given extensive use over the last yr now has a shutter count of 0 and a one yr warranty left :)

Not so Happy
I ahve until tonight to recalibrate my lenses... they took an age last time to get them right and theres not much chance of me managing in one day :(

No shutter count from last one BTW
 
Can't you just get the shutter count from the EXIF from the last image you took before the camera died?
 
I hate hearing stories about shutters dieing. Makes me think twice whipping out camera to take random shots.

Tony,

If you have the old values then you only need to go through the procedure for one lens of each max aperture value....the others sharing that aperture value should be offset by the same amount from your old readings....not strictly kosha but it'll be very close.

Stands to reason.. shame i didnt think of it haha :) yes good shout.. I ahve all mine in a text file just in case.. was such a pain to do it in the first place i made sure i had a backup of the settings:) Good call.. thanks :)

No idea... all cameras should ahve the ability to read shutter count IMHO .. like having a car and you cant read millage :(

well calibration seems to be exactly the same as before.. hmm Camera was brought brand new and presumably the AF is set to a certain ?? ,,, having had new shutter and reset I can only presume they set the AF to same ?? as per new... Woudl that sound reasonable?

the worksheet from canon actualy says... "If micro adjustments were used they will need to be rechecked" ..They had all dissapeared from the camera settings (all other setting in place) so i panicked.. looks like all is well :)

so much work on this week I need to be confident.. :)

maybe because when you first brought the camera the af could of been slightly out (say -1) so you adjusted you lenses to that(+1), then they adjusted it again(for shutter prob) which this time it could of been spot on (0), so your lenses would be out by (+1) so your lenses would need adjusting to(0)..

but yours sound like it was the same both times you got it, so there calibration must be very good, and your a happy bunny,

I'd be interested to know of the method you used to calibrate your lenses
 
The hardest lens to calibrate is the long ones.. 300mm and 400mm ..

A method I use at sports (guess anyone on grass) take a pic of someones boot...at 2.8 and a reasonable distance.. you can clearly see a line of sharp grass all the way across the pictures with it out of focus in front and back... easy to see of grass is sharp under behind or in front of the boot..its quite distinct the sharp grass and the blurred

Also shoot into a stadium crowd front on..... pic a subject.. think of each row of seats as layered.. if the person behind or in front is more sharp than the person you shot at then?

short lenses i have a clock in the kitchen.. shoot at center from an angle and you can clearly see what numbers are in focus... then I use the kids and shoot at there eyes.. see how sharp i get them :)

Yes I know about the proper methods to calibrate.. they never worked for me.. you cant beat a sharply photographed eye to know your lens is bob on :)

me? under normal shooting conditions is best no matter what the book says.. I want to know my shots i take every day are the ones in focus. nothing to say I am doing it right but you should see my pics from the 300 lens with a +8 adjustment... they are perfect... so aiservo center spot multi shot and hand held for shorter lens and monopod for bigger

I do put the focus out of range before each test. so the lens has to gain focus each time
