Canon 1ds mk2 n

You can get a 1D Mk2N and a 1Ds Mk2. Essentially the main difference is the 1Ds series are full frame, and the 1D series are 1.3x Crops.
 
Well if you don't fancy a 1.3 crop then yes but the 1 series cameras are the top of the tree in terms of build quality, customisation and handling.
 
1Ds - essentially a studio camera (or landscapes/portraits) etc. Full Frame 800 Iso low frame rate proffesional camera
1D Mk2N - 1.3 crop - sports camera, great AF, great frame rate, slightly odd menu system (certainly very different from your current camera). 800 Iso is ok, any higher and it gets a bit "noisy" but still pretty acceptable.

Depending on what you shoot either will do the job really rather well, they were great cameras when they came out and recent models have only really allowed people to shoot at the extreme ends, for every day shooting they still both perform well in their intended market. Some say the Mk2N is still the best AF that Canon make (1Dx and 5D3 owners might disagree now though).

Good camera, love my 1D, built like a brick $hit house, autofocus system still miles ahead of everything in canon's entry/intermediate level systems (xxxxD, xxxD, xxD, 5D, 6D and 7D series), what lets it down is ISO performance and only 8MPs, but I can still get an A2 print out of it. Battery performance average and no video, but still a very good camera. As Matt said, slightly fingers and thumbs menu system, but you get use to it. Only word of advice is check the shutter count, although shutter life is 200,000/250,000 counts it might have been hammered at that price. Shutter replacements about £200-300
 
If your interested in one then that might be a good buy.
 
Well the weather sealing on the body would mean you could make full use of weather sealed lenses.

Some would say that paying for edge to edge L quality is partly wasted on a 1.6 crop camera as it only makes use of the centre area of the lens. A cheaper lens may be perfectly fine at it's centre.

1.3 crop (and more so full frame) cameras 'use' more of the lens so benefit from having lenses with edge to edge quality such as your L lenses.

What you will find is that your lenses 'appear' shorter in terms of focal length.

Depends what you're taking photo's of.

Action photography, miles better than your 550D, autofocus speed is lightning. 1.3x crop v 1.6x crop so you get 31mm at the wide end rather than 39mm, but you lose at the other end. Also only 8MP, so if you liked really cropping into images because of the 550D 18MPs then you might think this is a slight disadvantage, but for me personnally, top notch autofocus sytem can't be beat.
