Canon 1d's mk2

Hi guys, how would something like this compare in image quality to a canon 5d or even the 5d mk2. I've saw these for under £600 and I'm tempted.

I know it's big and heavy and has very good image quality but is it still good enough baring in mind it's a fair age.

IQ is good

I'd have another 1Ds2 over a 5D but unless you want the more advanced AF system of the 1Ds2, the 5D2 has a few advantages being newer.

What I would say about the 1Ds2 (same as the 1D2) is that it has the tiny rear screen and the older two handed rear button controls which can drive you mad if you're used to the 1D mark 3 versions or other newer Canon models.

Not sure what used prices for 1Ds3 are compared to the 5D2

IQ is marginally worse than 5DIII at sensible settings, or pretty incredible for camera released in 2004 when Nikon had nothing worthy using even as a doorstop. I picked one over 5DII (mainly over AF) a while back. 5DII and 1DSIII had very heavy AA filter which sort of negated increase in MP. You do have to have a lot of luck finding one in good condition and reasonable usage considering these were expensive top of the range pro tools and not pensioner Bob toys.
Of course 1Ds3 may make more sense from a technical point of view, but they are still priced (£1-1.2k) too highly considering it is 8 year old studio camera, and probably abused too much. Add a little more cash and you can bag a new 5DIII.

5D3 (or 6D come to mention it) would have obvious appeal but we're getting way past the budget mentioned by the op when he was asking about the merits of a 1Ds2 compared to a 5D or 5D2. Probably my fault for mentioning a used 1Ds3.

Right now - as a full frame body where I wasn't demanding top notch AF - I'd go 5D2 then 1Ds2 then 5D if they were the options in budget.

1Ds2 is a fine camera if you can can get a 'loved' one for a good price. Try those buttons out though. I mentioned it before but they really can be a faff.

It's a 1.3 crop rather than full frame but you do get that extra width over a crop. You get the Af benefits of the 1 series, the better smaller battery, the larger better rear screen and the modern buttons.

FF is not a must at all. I will be shooting everything as i'm undertaking an HND photography course lasting 2 years. I do take mostly portraits though in my own time and until now i have never used a full frame camera. I have used mainly Canon 50d's until i switched to Fuji recently but because i can't afford to cover all bases eg macro,wide angle etc with the fuji gear i need to switch back to take advantage of the college's lenses. I was thinking of another 50d but since i don't technically have spend big on lenses i thought i get buy a more expensive body and use the lenses from the college.

If you're making use of the college's lenses then it may be worth speaking to them to find out if they have EF-S lenses as unlike EF lenses, you wouldn't be able to use them with a full frame or 1.3 crop body.

They have both. They cover all bases with regards full frame and crop sensor. I'm wary about purchasing something new like a 70d simply because of how quickly they lose value. That's why I was thinking of an older body but one with a quality sensor.

If lenses aren't an issue then that 1Ds2 that tuttonp is offering you in your other thread would be worth looking at given the very low shutter count.

Apart from the larger heavier pro body - the main difference between the 1Ds2 and the 5D (and 5D2 for that matter) is the AF system.

They are like night and day but it depends on whether you need it.

The 1d's 3 is a good 500 quid more which is outwith my budget I'm afraid. I'm wary that moving from the fuji xe2 which was a pleasure to work with its buttons and rings to the older body will be a pain but the main thing for me shooting mainly portraits is image quality so I can put up with that.
