Does anyone who owns a Canon 1DS MKIII have any experience with the soft focusing problem which occures when using AF? My understanding is that it's not all cameras but just a particular batch and that canon will repair the problem FREE of charge. But I've also heard that some cameras have been returned in a worse condition than before they went. I'm about to send mine in but would appreciate any comments from those who may have had some experience of this. Cheers TC

Yes I've altered microadjust - & + but I'm still geting soft focus. I originally thought it was a lens problem but just having bought a new 70-200 it's still there.

Sorry to be stating fairly obvious things here, it just helps build up a better picture!

I presume you are using a fast enough shutter speed to eliminate camera shake? Do you have a flash to hand? If so, perhaps use that and see if you get better results with the AF assist light. Finally, how exactly are you testing the focus?

It is true that there was a recall issued to MKIII owners, and the problem was fixed for free.. so you shouldn't need to worry about that.

I presume you have just bought this 2nd hand?

Yes I did buy it secondhand and I guess there is always a risk. But apart from this irritating small problem it's perfectly ok shooting on centre focus point.

Regarding testing, I've used a chart, tripod, flash, studio lighting, daylight, IS on and off you name it. I'm convinced I have a problem. I just don't want to send it off then have it returned in a worse state.

I've never heard of anyone on here sending one away and it return 'in a worse state'.

If you do a google for the serial number it should tell you if it was in the 'suspect' batch.

Do contact Canon about it. I've never heard of one being made worse either. After their initial denial that a problem even existed (which just shouldn't have happened) they were actually very good at sorting it.

Sounds a bit similar to issues i was having. I've got to try the camera again, but i was getting shocking performance with the outside AF points on cars moving away.

If you have a Canon service number or something can you PM it to me?

I've had to submit one of their online enquiry forms.

Hi Nick

I called Canon UK at Borehamwood Elstree Tel: 0844 369 0100 option 2 followed by option 2 again I think. Anyway they do admit to there being a problem with some of their 1DS MKIII's. If you Google Canon 1DS MKIII AF Problem you should find an official acknowledgement form Canon.

I did read a complaint from someone in the USA who had their 1DS returned in a worse condition than when it went in. I'm guessing that was an isolated case. I was just wondering if anyone here in the UK had had the same thing happen. I think I'll send mine in and let you all know the outcome.

Got to go.....tea's on the table.

If it comes back worse just send it back, when you do send it in ask for them to collect it, don't pay for the postage yourself.

A 'soft focus' means it is either front or back focussing. All lenses are in focus somewhere (unless it's broken) so it's likely the camera just isn't focussing where it should be.
