Hi there

I know this is an older dslr, but I'm wondering how good they are still?

Mainly be used for landscapes, CBS currently use a 40d so not sure if this would be an upgrade or not?
 
My biggest worry with older cameras is the batteries. I think this one uses a Ni-MH battery, same for the MkII whereas the MkIII uses lithium-ion. I remember when I was looking to go full frame I was considering the MkII but ended up with the 5D Classic because it used a Li-Ion battery. Not sure if you can get 3rd party Li-Ion for the 1Ds MkI and II?

Ni-MH is ok but I wanted Li-Ion.
 
I'm sure it's still a great camera at lowish ISOs (only goes up to 1250 I believe). Bear in mind that the camera is very old now and as such it is slow to process files and has an appalling LCD. This is what stopped me buying one a few years back. I ended up with a 5D instead.
 
Thanks guys, so I guess you both bought the 5d original, is this in your opinion worth about £250 more than the 1ds?
 
Well, this thread making me sad because i have 5D original and 1DsII i am looking for to sell them locally, but seems they are dead sale here and all go for newer camera even used such as 5DII or even 5DIII used, i was happy with my 5D original and 1Ds MarkII before.
 
g, can you clarify why you'd buy the 5d then, the one bonus is I have the batteries as I think there the same as my 40d, is the image quality so much better than the 5?


Tarim, your a bit too far away for a deal I'm afraid, there are lots of the 5ds it seems on fleabay for around the £350 mark
 
The original 5D has terrific image quality and handling, I stepped up to it from a 40D and didn't look back! High ISO performance is excellent. It's just not much of a sports camera unless you pre-focus. 5D classic is probably the best bang for buck today, iq wise.
 
FIles from the 1Ds are lovely.

Yes, it is old, yes the LCD display is terrible, yes it takes a while to buffer shots but for landscapes none of that really matters much.

Batteries really aren't a problem, 7 day shop NP-E3 compatibles are about £17 each IIRC and you get well over 1000 shots per battery in my experience. Just make sure it comes with a battery charger as they're stupidly expensive.

You get professional build quality (you could hammer nails in with it), very good AF (if you need it) and great IQ, all for a fraction of the price when new. Sure, more modern cameras at more money offer more modern features but at the price you pay for a 1Ds now I don't think they make a bad buy at all.
 
I was looking at the mark ii, 5d vs 1ds, I went for the 1ds and the build quality is amazing and really just feels right in the hand, the 5d even with a grip just doesn't feel the same imho, I've never found battery to be an issue it last for ages, I've found my self shooting days and not charging in between.

Now don't get me wrong, it's an old camera, the LCD sucks and you can't depend own it for reference or image quality, but once you have the confidence in the camera it really just to check level and exposure burnout but you get used to it, also the two button approach to everything is very alien at the start but you get used to it, and know when i pick up my 40d I'm pressing two buttons without realising and then getting confused why it doesn't work lol.

it gives an amazing look to all the photos you take, it's hard to explain, somewhat less digital and more traditional look to the shoots, even at high iso it almost looks like film grain apposed to noise, I'd give a 1ds ii a big thumbs up, I love it

The 1ds was fantastic, a bit slow, but the files were very film like.
I used one for a couple of years, the biggest problem was dust, it was before the days of in camera sensor cleaning so if you are shooting landscapes then a lot of cloning may be required.

Up to 400 it was OK, anything higher and it struggled, a lot.

Scared to think how much they are now, I paid £5700 for mine.

nice to hear good news on the 1ds as its potentially the best value at around £200, the mark ii would be nice but the cost difference means I could get a 5d as well for similar money.

the slow buffer shouldn't be a huge issue I'd have thought for landscapes or architecture it's probable main use, think I might take a punt on the 1ds, the right price means I can always move it on if I don't get on with its controls

At £200 buy it! I've had two in the past, regretted selling them now....

thanks Mark, I'm usually at the coast college and that area, still need to find the north bay beaches from there but not really had a chance to get a look yet.


so all if there was a 5d and a 1ds on the table and your challenge was both a great landscape and a great architectural shot to take what would be your preferred body?

between 5D classic and 1Ds mk1 i will go with 5Dc, but if between 5D1 and 1DsII then i will go with 1DsII.

I bought the 5D classic for improving my studio work. However, for what you are needing the camera for then I'd go with the 1Ds as you are at risk of being caught in rain. :)
 
many thanks all, I think it's going to be the 1ds for me, might be a beast to carry around, but it seams to be getting most of the votes and something that was £8k can't be that bad at around £200.
