I have just purchased locally a Canon 20-35 2.8 L lens for a nice price :) so dived in quickly without fully researching the lens.

I have read mostly good reviews but also some not so good comments(flare).

Anyone own or have experience of this lens, like to give their opinion of this lens. Not had a chance to try out my copy yet.

Thanks

I'm not sure I know this lens. The 20 - 35 2.8 I know of isn't and L series lens.

However, in my opinion Canon don't make a bad lens as such, so you should be OK whatever it is. However, if it is an L series lens, it'll be a fantastic lens and just about as good as you can get for am SLR.

What did you pay for it?

The markings on the lens are Canon Zoom Lens EF 20-35mm 1:2.8 L and came with a Cokin UV 72mm filter and EW-75II hood. I think its a pretty old lens.

I found a link to some reviews at work today, will post link if I can find it again.

OK. Is it auto focus? Anyway, an L series lens should be excellent optics however old it is.

its a nice lens, I owned one for a bit. It doesn't have a usm motor makes it noisy and it was slow compared to usm lenes. Plus i dont know the repair / service state with canon on this lens, if that is an issue give them a call.

well, if you do decide to part with this lens. i am v interested in owning this lens. would be willing to do a deal, with either 350d or 30d. or cash.

The lens was produced between 1989 and 1996 when the EF17-35/2.8L replaced it. It has AFD focus drive (hence the noise).

Was actually basically the first wave of lenses in the EF mount. IIRC it was brought out alongside the 80-200mm f2.8

The 20-35mm should be a decent lens, providing it not been abused. Not as sharp as the 16-35/17-35 but it's half the price of those lenses!!

IMO the auto-focus on the lens I tried was very fast. 70mm end of a 70-200mm USM fast. Of course this is not a fair comparison because the 70mm end has a load further to travel but from close to inf it's about the same.
