Hi, just wondering if anyone on here has had a repair done on one of these, mine is a mk2 version and was attached to my 30d when they felly out of my backpack, the autofocus is very inconsistent now, af upto infinity is ok, but focusing to closest focus it stops, but if I focus manually to near its closest focus the af then seems to be fine, but the problem reoccurs.
 
Does it work ok with any other lens ?
It maybe the mirror box.
 
Ouch- sounds bad. I have one of these lenses but haven't had a repair done on one. I have heard of the mk1's with the built in -hoods being dropped and the poor guy couldn't get it repaired so had to break it off as it was stuck.
 
I have tried my 18-55 and 70-300 and they appear to focus correctly. When focusing my 200mm it will focus to infinity ok,
won't focus to its cfd of 1.5m but if I manually focus, the af will then work ok, around the closer distances, but then it won't af back to infinity.
But yesterday when I used it at a party it was fine, but all of a sudden wouldn't focus properly. I am wondering if the af motor has been knocked out of alignment. Canon elstree don't have a fixed price repair for this lens either, it has to go off for an estimate.
 
Elstree's fixed prices are only for certain repairs etc. However, they seem to be the cheapest around, work fairly quickly and give you a 6 month guarantee on the repair.
 
I have a had a thought about it, I do not know the lens perfectly but it sounds like the runner may be out of line, ie a small dent in the runner enough that when it gets there the camera stops, as it would when it reaches its limit.
couple of questions
Does it feel stiff after the point at which it stops focusing ?
when it reaches this point does it start going back out to infinity?
They have a minimum charge so give Canon a call.
Just read yes they do need to see it, I had to weigh up cost of repair over value. how much would it be to replace, how much it is worth in this state and wether you want to pay the cost of postage, they may give an on average price.

I would also possibly email, fixation, camserve and Lehmans and see what they are saying
 
It stops and stutters, then sometimes with each press of the shutter button halfway it skips in tiny increments. It's going to be sent off through my local camera shop for an estimate, I am 99% sure they use Lehmens,
 
I would check costings as with canon you know what you are getting.
Best customer service next to Toyota.
Just be prepared to pay a big bill, less of a shock.
Mine was £400 plus, but included parts.
 
Looks like I will waiting a little longer for the estimate, a £20 deposit is required which would either go towards the repair if it was to go ahead, if not, then in store credit. It sounds like its the gears, which are very expensive to repair. Looks like I will be using it manually for a while

Send it to elstree. They won't charge a deposit etc and if the repair is too much they will just send the lens back. The only thing you will pay is the postage.
 
which is about £16, they use UPS.
