it really depends on what you shoot, for that sort of cash you could pick up a Canon 5D3 with a 70-200 f/4 or 17-40 (if you shop around/buy grey)
the 5d3 is a massive leap from a compact, it's an awesome camera but comes with obvious caveats that it's big and heavy, especially in comparison to what you are used to.
but, you will want for nothing. the image quality, af, noise handling and ergonomics are all fantastic.
i wouldn't hesitate getting a 5d3. the specific lenses are a different matter. and although it slightly exceeds your budget, i think a 5d3 and 35l is perhaps the most delightful combination, but i love fast primes and the 24-70 would probably be more useful to most people.
