Canon 24-105 f/4 lens or 24-70 f/2.8?

I've got the Canon 24-105mm f/4 IS L as my walkabout lens on my 5D. It's a good, versatile focal range but I'm not quite happy with the IQ except under bright sunlit conditions, it seems to lack a little in contrast and sharpness and things look a tad flat.

Would I be better off with the 24-70? I hear the image quality is generally considered superior. I'm not worried about the decreased focal range as I have the 70-200 L to cover that.
 
I went through the same thoughts and now own the 24-70. I found the photos to be slightly sharper and the out of focus areas to appear nicer.
If you don't think you will miss the IS of the 24-105 then go for it.
 
I have the 24-70 on my 5DII and love it... prefect 'walkabout lens' IMO.

If you're not sure about whether its for you I'd recommend what I did and hire one for a week and see how you get on. For me it confirmed without doubt it was the right lens for me :)
 
I've got the 24-105mm on my 5d Mk1 and love it... dont see much wrong with it... but I guess it's about what you are used to... it was like night and day compaired to the 28-135mm I had...

as a walkabout lens the focal length variation is important and its that what made me go for the 24-105mm when I looked... although you will have the 24-70 and the 70-200 range covered... its nice to have overlap I find as there is nothing more anoying when doing walkabout photography than changing lenses all the time... Looking at how many shots I take with the lens in the 70-105mm range for me it was well worth it than a slight drop in IQ... which for my level is nothing I would really notice or cant boost a little in PP.

As you already have a stunning lens in the 24-105mm seems an expensive swap for what benefit you get... I would have a dif view if you did not have the 24-105mm already btw.

I found that my 5D and 24-105 combo was not as good IQ wise when compared to my friends 5D and 24-70. Turned out to be a slight focus error between my lens and body, which the nice people in Elstree sorted for me. Now the lens combo is tack sharp and comparable with my friends 24-70. May be worth a look into, after all, its a great lens in all other respects.

I agree with Mark, although the 24-70 has come down in price a good bit it is still going to be a few hundred to upgrade as the 24-105 regularly goes on sale.

If you don't need the f/2.8 I wouldn't bother. 24-70 is heavier and lacks IS which comes in handy at times. I was in the same dilema earlier this year but I decided against the swap, benefit was less than cost for me.
