Canon 24-105 F4 L IS USM?

I'm considering purchasing one of these but I first just wanted to check whether there was a new model or something else that explained some of the price discrepancy I'm seeing.

Lots seems to be going for new on Ebay at around the £420 mark and I've seen a few sell on here 2nd hand for just below that. However, WEX have it for over £800 (!) and Panamoz and One-stop Digital are both over £500.

Am I looking at the same thing? It seems unusual for WEX to be so much higher than the "new" price on Ebay and even for Ebay to beat Panamoz by £100 seems strange. I realise that some of these aren't UK sourced but I don't think that accounts for the difference.
 
....market saturation. It's a kit lens, albeit a good one. I prefer the EF 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 for one third the weight and one tenth of the price, but it's older and plastic [although it has USM, it doesn't have IS]. Still, if you want one capitalise on the fact that it came bundled with every 5D 1-2-3 out there.
 
It's a great lens. Sharp, versatile but designed for FF rather than crop.

Not a kit lens in the true sense (being an L for one thing), but bundled in with the kit versions of 6d and 5d3.
 
So there aren't different versions/models? It's purely because there are a lot of them?
 
No there's only one model.

There's a big difference in price between uk stock and imports.

Yeah I realise that but the imports are all generally around the same price (with Panamoz normally the cheapest) but ebay beats it by over £100 which is what's confused me.
 
Maybe used? I'd be wary of *very* cheap eBay lenses!
 
Apparently Canon are going to announce an EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM at the upcoming Photokina.
 
That makes no sense to me, why get rid of the constant aperture?
 
I think there's room in the lineup for both, the constant aperture and L build will still headline a few sales. This could be more a replacement for the 28-135; the STM might provide an improvement in focus speed or a quieter solution for videographers.

24mm at the wide end on FF is far more useful than the extra 30mm on the long end IMO, especially as that end is covered so well by the short telephoto zooms and the ability to crop into a 20MP+ image. It's why I chose the EF 24-85mm over the more modern 28-105 and 28-135 lenses as my cheapo walkaround on the 6D. That it's a great lens with a lovely rendering, lightweight, ring-type USM, and available for under £100, makes it a killer deal for 6D'ers in my book!

Plain better? I've not seen that at all, every review I've seen says they're on par with each other, with the Canon having the slight edge at the long end and the sigma being sharper at the wide end (though I can't tell the difference tbh from sample images).

It's also a lot more expensive.

ones ive looked at say the sigma is abit better, ive not looked at whole lot though as i dont have a FF camera
 
The Sigma is obviously newer and probably has better IS (or OS) but I'm not sure that's worth the extra. It's at least £300 more than an imported Canon.
 
On full-frame, Canon 24-105 is a brilliant lens. Manageable size and weight, very versatile range, sharp, focuses close, takes 77mm filters, L build. For 'general purpose' photography, I use it for 75% of everything. I've not tried the new 24-105 Sigma, but it doesn't seem to offer anything much extra.

A new STM version has been rumoured, and that fits with Canon's recent revamps. If so, judging by other STM upgrades, I'd expect it to be very good indeed, and a lot more than just a new AF mech. And if it's L-grade, more expensive.
