Wonder if anyone has any views on this lens.

There are 3 as new ones for sale on here just now, are they not any good?

I had been thinking about getting one but seeing so many for sale has put me off slightly.

It seems as though some people seem to prefer the 17-55 F2.8 and maybe the 24-105 is trying to do too much and the F4 is not good enough at the wide end or have I got this wrong..

Any views?

Hi

I'm saving for one, I used to own a 28-135IS and found it a great focal range for me, so I'm going to replace it with a 24-105. I have been tossing the idea of the 17-55 and also the 24-70, but have decided for what I need / focal length I use, I'm happy to forgo the F2.8 for the extra focal length.

That is probably until I have the money and then have a "I don't know which to buy moment":lol:

I've had 2 of them and they're a very good lens and if you can live with the fact that 24mm on a crop body isn't very wide then the range makes them a great walk about lens.
In my experience out of the camera they aren't as sharp as a 24-70 f2.8 but a bit more post processing sharpening sorts that out pretty well and the images, to me, don't have the silky smooth look of the 24-70 but thats just my preference. Can't offer an opinion on the 17-55 I've never had one.

They're are always a few for sale but I wouldn't worry about that.

I suppose the 24-70 f2.8 is the one that people would rather have, as the f2.8 is going to be better, although more expensive.

In answer to my own question I suppose it depends *** you are shooting.

I like wide so I would probably prefer the 17-55

I'm one of the people currently selling and I can say from my limited time with it that it's an excellent lens. The picture quality is amazing.. (Check the flickr groups for some examples).

My reason for sale is to fund the 24-70L.

I initially purchased the 24-105L and the Sigma 50 f1.4 - the plan being to use the 50mm for indoor work etc. What I'm finding is that I'm using the 50mm at f2.8 and increasing my ISO. This gives me an appropriate level of depth - any lower and the DOF is just too shallow for me.

Given this I figured I might as well trade them both in and get the 24-70L which will save me swapping lenses. The extra reach is great too but I have the 70-200 on my shopping list and that would just give me far to much over lap with the 24-105L.

I want to buy one (as its on my list) but I've just bought a 100-400L and am looking at a 100mm L macro, it will have to wait! I've heard nothing but good reviews about this lens though! My only issue with it would be the fact I'm on a cropped body, so 24 become 38ish which isnt very wide!

I think it a great lens and the one I use the most as general prupose lens, I did have the 28-135 but when I moved up to my 5D after my 10D I decided after a while to get the 24-105 and not looked back, I do slightly miss the longer reach but, the fact the it starts at 24mm makes up for that, and as long as there nothing in your way use your legs and walk closer :). If I traveling light ( or photography is just the side part of the event (ie with better half) then it my 17-40 and 24-105 and flashgun in the bag and I set for most things for the day.

The 24-105 is my main walk around lens, with a 70-200 f/4 IS on the long end. I use it mainly for outdoors so f/4 is not too much of a problem, plus the IS works.

For indoors I prefer a small prime, f/1.8. It depends on what you're in to. I used the 24-105 on a 5D mkII, now I use it on a 7D. I know many people will say that the 24 range is no longer wide on the 1.6 crop, but for me it is not an issue as I'm not a big fan of wide angle. my main range is 50mm-70mm+.

If you plan to stick with crop sensors and like your wide angle, the 17-55 2.8 will be a good choice. If you plan to go full frame in future and not too bothered about the wider end of the lens, go for the 24-105.

Mine is one for sale as well.....it's a brilliant lens on full-frame, although I've never used it on a crop so couldn't really comment. I think the main reason people sell is to upgrade to the 24-70 because they need the 2.8.

Mines hardly off the camera. I'm full frame so it's a true wide angle.

Sharp, crisp and vibrant pictures. I couldn't ask for more. The IS makes it more manageable for me as I never could hold a camera still.

They come up for sale regularly because this is a big forum with loads of mambers all doing the same thing :D
