Canon 24-105mm L

I don't own one at the moment but i have used one in the past and it's a very good lens I doubt you'll be disappointed :-)
 
Never used one myself but it does look awfully tempting! If you haven't already, just search on t'interwebs for sample shots from it :) Any Canon lens with the addition of the letter 'L' is pretty special!
 
Can I just ask would it benefit me ti have a canon 70-200 f4 or would I not need one having the 24-105 looking at some pics on google the 24-105 seems to zoom in quite a bit
 
105 even on a crop isn't long enough for serious wildlife. You need to be pushing around 300mm at least for most of that work. As for macro you won't get much out of them, better off with a dedicated macro lens like the Tamron 90mm or Canon 100mm f/2.8.

The 24-105 is a good lens but it doesn't perform particularly well on a crop as the f/4 aperture is fairly limiting on such small sensors and it's strength tends to lie in its accross-the-frame sharpness which doesn't come through on a crop, or at least it's not impressive on a crop.

Lol i did win £1700 on bet365 last night so thought I'd treat myself but I did say to the wife she can have half only way I could buy one lol

Canon 15-85 IS (that's 15-85 and NOT 17-85).
 
Want a zoom lens in the £500 price range the 24-105 will be just a walk around lens an mainly pics of my kids with it

It wait until you figure out what you are missing from the 24-105. It could be you want more length but equally it could be wanting a wider lens.
 
The Sigma 150-500 is a nice lens. New its around the 750 mark, not sure about used prices. The 500 mm long end is a real bonus for wildlife. Be careful of used as early examples were a bit prone to Sigma QA/QC issues. The lens has a very effective stabiliser and isnt to heavy for its zoom reach. It lacks a focus limit switch which would be a great addition but at the price point its a very nice capable lens.

Agree with the above.

Great Lens, but not on a 550d, neither wide enough or long enough or fast enough at F/4



£500 budget ....... Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8!! Used.

Second hand 5D, but you'd probably be frustrated with the speed it operates at compared to your 550D. Your problem is that the 24-105 is optimised for full frame cameras. Yours is a crop camera which has a smaller sensor (by a factor of 1.6 in each direction) so if you are used to using an 18-55 lens, you may find the field of view you get on the 24-105 is restrictive. You may not though, it's a personal thing.
