I am torn...

I have 17-40 f4 and 35 f2

I just have this yearning for 24-70 f2.8 mkII

Money in the bank or lens? Am wondering if I buy now from hdew for around £1250 what the value would be in 5 yrs.. I would be suprised if canon bring out another 24-70 in that time in which case it should hold its second hand value around 950 But if they bring out same lens with IS then the value drops like a stone I am guessing..

The MKI still going for £500/650 so I assume in 5 years unless there's a rumour of a new lens possible but unlikely that the MKII will be in the £700/900 ball park
 
There's been talk of a Canon 24-70mm f2.8 IS L for years. In fact at least one copy of it already exists, but who knows if/when that will hit the shelves. Could be 6 months, could be never. I doubt it would hit 2nd hand prices too hard.
 
You are more likely to see Sigma f/2 OS version than IS f/2.8 from Canon. Even if they did, it would cost £2k+ (because they CAN).

Don't forget 24-70mm f/4 L IS if you don't need f/2.8 or don't want to spend as much.

P.S. The mk1 lens still costs fairly silly money, considering it is now obsolete and won't take any more good photos. :)
 
I would be surprised if we see a 24-70 2.8 is, I can't see canon putting it out there and destroying sales if the current mk ii. I also think that if they could have done it affordably they would have in the mk ii. I doubt that much has changed in two years.
I just took delivery of a mk ii today, (from Hdew) and whilst my testing so far has been sofa based, I'm impressed, to my mind a noticeable improvement in the mk I.

You are going to love it. It is a fantastic lens and I really don't see how Canon could improve it. 'm in the U.S and I bought it new for 2300$. Now it is 1700 if you know where to get it from. I was in the store today and it was 2300$ I guess you do not have the website Canon price watch. It is a great place site for deals. Check it out.

I bought it from a grey importer, much cheaper than uk high street price. It always amuses me though that I could travel to the U.S, stay over for a couple of nights & the savings on a body & lens would pay for the trip.
 
I've got one, and the 24-105 f4...if you don't need the f2.8 then save yourself a packet and get the 24-105 f4, still a fantastic lens, has a bit more reach and has IS.

really depends what you want it for.
 
The 24-70 2.8 is a peach of a lens. It's probably paid more mortgage repayments and gas bills than all the other bit of glass I own put together!
 
I need to make a point of using mine a little more often. I keep going for my 16-35 f2.8 or 50mm f1.2.
 
I need the 2.8 and to be honest.. when I popsted this I think i was trying to convince myself.. Mike.P has the right idea... just that half of me thinks money and half of me thinks life..its a battle.... almost sure i wil be buying one this week and it will be a grey import as canon do honour the warranty on imported lens (not so much camera bodies)

I totally agree. If they could of made it with I.s and kept it affordable they would if already done it.
There is now real competition in the market so upping the price could mean suicide for another lens with this focal length. I just don't see how or why they would do it.
