Canon 24-70 f/4 IS - do I need to return it?

Just got mine delivered today but the zoom ring doesn't seem right to me. If anyone else owns this lens, could you tell me if the zoom ring is looser going from 70-24 then it is from 24-70? Or should I be returning this and asking for a new lens. I've taken a few pictures and it seems ok, just seems weird the zoom ring does this.

Focus also seems fine if that would make any difference to your decision.

And it seems like it was used and returned before, there are scratches on the lens cap and marks on the focus ring, I have already emailed the company about these.

If you're in any doubt then I would ask for a replacement

Are you pointing the camera straight or up?
If you point the camera down, is the zoom looser going from 24 to 70?
 
It was straight on, I've looked at the sharpness in the corner and it seems alright as far as I can tell. I think I'm ok with the lens, the place I bought it from has responded saying its new but I can return it if I want to but I have to RMSD it back. The main thing that bothers me that shouldn't is the scratches on the cap :/ as I've cleaned the marks off the lens barrel and the hood is unmarked.
 
Ask them for a new lens cap it should be spotless if it's brand new and never been out of the box!
 
Yeah, I thought about that but I thought it might sound a bit sad/petty. I will ask and see what they say. Thanks for the advice :)
 
Wait till I'm in the office, I'll get some of ours off the shelf and see how the zoom mechanism behaves.
 
OK, we only have one of them here, but that's better than none.

It seems to me that there's a little bit more resistance between 50-70mm than there is between 24-50mm. Not much, but it's there. That's not at all surprising because in complex zooms like this there are often different internal movements which happen at different places in the zoom range. But it does have an interesting effect.

If I start at 24mm and zoom it with a very light touch, I find I get stuck around 50mm and need to push a little bit harder. But if I'm starting at the 70mm end, I push hard enough to get it started and then that takes me all the way down to 24mm. I don't think there's really any difference in the two directions, but it feels a bit different depending on whether the stiffer bit is at the start or the end of your action.

Thank you Stewart, it seems like that is a good explanation as to what is going on with it, the picture seems fine so I will keep hold of it!

Never hurts to ask, if your spending a lot of money you should be happy not settling for something that isn't right.
