going to buy either the zoom or the 2 primes.
the most useful and used focal length I seem to use the most so the primes are looking favourite but would welcome
any thoughts from others before i go ahead

I can't comment on the primes but the 24-70/4 is usable but not special, Chris....certainly not special like the 16-35/4. If corner to corner sharpness at f/4 is you aim then I think it would disappoint you.

I'm not a fan of zooms in general but the 16-35/4 is quite spectacular. I use mine on IR converted bodies and IR generally highlights any weaknesses but it's rare that I can fault it.....probably the best value for money lens out there (if the focal length is where you want it).

have to say I'm liking what I've seen so far of the 16-35/4 plus maybe the 50mm 1.4 with my 70-200 I think id be happy :)
 
I was seriously considering getting the 24-70mm f4 but mixed reviews and seeing many on the second hand market already (e.g. at MPB) put me off and I got the f2.8 instead. Stunning performer and much more flexible than primes.

yes i find myself shooting most at 24 and 35 on the zoom i had and the extra width sounds really interesting and one i would like to explore,thanks for pointing that lens out,i hadn't considered one that wide but it now is top of the list.
 
The 35mm f2is is a lovely lens mine is glued to my 5d mkii it feels like the perfect package to me and the results are great!

I'm considering a 24mm prime and ditching the 24-105mm as that would cover 99% of my shooting and I have an 85mm f1.8 in the bag just in case!
 
Sigma 24-35 might be worth it? Faster than the 24mm and matching the 35. Also, I've had the 24-70 f4 and it was ok, I would've taken a 35 and 50 instead or 35 and 24 in your case

Im now heading 16-35 plus 50 1.4 , 16-35 gets great reviews, which 50 would you hav gone for?

which situations have you encountered where you felt you needed <1.8?, I had 2 Canon 50mm 1.4s at various times, didn't like either on FF or aps-c although I did like the Sigma 50mm 1.4, that was a beauty.

you are welcome to borrow my 1.8 so you can get a feel for the 50mm on FF, you might find it suits more having the cheaper 1.8 which will free up funds for the 85mm 1.8 too..

Good of you to offer David,what didn't you like about the 1.4?
 
if i went for the 16-35 which is looking likely,the 70-200 was going to cover me re 85mm etc but the 50 was for in-between the 35 and the 70.
 
Why don't you try like without anything between 35 and 70 for a while? The 50 1.4 is rumoured to be updated, the 50 stm would a good interim choice, or even the 50 1.8 ii for about £60 if you definitely need it though

Sold it to MPB to fund the 16-35,because I have the 70-200 it seemed silly to have that as well,thats why i was going to get the 24-70 to match but then Canonbob mentioned the 16-35 and I really fancy that.

yes i certainly won't bother with a 50 for the time being,i guess it was just fancying a faster prime for a change and 50 made sense ,but want to get used to the new lens first,then decide like you say.
jessops were doing the 50 1.8 ii for £59 but no stock in warehouse the other day i noticed apart from a few shops.
