Canon 24-70 weight.

I recently purchased from the forum a Canon 24-70 F2.8 MKI, i bought to take some photos at my Grandaughters rather special Birthday this Sunday as recently i only had 3 primes and if i was happy then to keep it and sell my 24mm and 50 mm primes as lens chaging is also a problem at times

I have one of these lenses some years ago and totally forgot now big and heavy they are and as i am disabled fear a lot of my shots will be a little shaky when not on a Tripod especially as the Day shots will be outside probably in high winds.

I love having the F2.8 probably more than IS but fear my obvious limitations with regard weight and size might mean IS is the way to go.

So can anyone tell me is the MKII any lighter or smaller or am i looking at a 24-70 F4 or 24-105 F4? if i want a versitile zoom thats not too heavy and large?
 
Tony, IIRC there's a Tamron 24-70 VC lens which offers both the f/2.8 aperture and Vibration Control. A friend uses one on his Nikon D800 and loves it.
 
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, half the weight of the Canon

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8g =512g
Canon 24-70mm MKI = 950g
Canon 24-70mm MKII = 805g
Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC = 825g

Only one winner if weight is important and at around £200 a massive price difference
 
It's a good chunky weight, middle of the road really, it has a solid feel to it.

When you are using it, both hands, when not, over the shoulder. It's not a bother, and I shoot with 2 bodies, and like daugirdas there above, add 2 x 600EX-RT and you wish it is just the body and lens !

Yes i have tried but i still manage to get camera shake, i use a tripod when i can but i have no real grip in my right hand so always affraid ill drop the thing. but many thanks

Thanks Nod the weight @ 825g is a put off although the VC would be ideal.

Thank you Gary that is most helpful, without sounding like a Lens snob could i ever get the same image quality from a £200 lens that i get with this one?
I must say my camera and lenses make up for my inabilty when it comes to photography.

LOL, yes mate, its stunning IQ, ive owned a few copies of the Canon when i shot Canon and pound for pound the Tamron wipes the floor with it, i switched to Nikon a while back and it was the first lens i bought, i use it with the unforgiving 36mp D800 and its superb
