Looking to get an upgrade from my kit lens on my 7d. Has anyone had both lens's and tell me which they preferred. Both are f2.8 so is performance similar. pretty knew to all this stuff but would me losing the extra 7mm at the bottom end mean a lot on my cropped 7d ???

Any opinions or possible other lenses to look out for much appreciated

Or The only 2 performance lenses I would put on a 7D at that focal range are the 17-55 or 15-85....

It depends what you take pictures of. Have a look at the exif data on some of your pictures and see how often you use 17-24mm. Another thing to consider is if you are likely to change to full frame in the near future. If so the 17-55 or any other efs lens would need to be changed

What other lenses do you have and what would leave you with focal range gaps? For example if you had a WA 10-22/24 then a 24-70 makes sense. But if you have nothing below 24 then I reckon you will probably miss it.

Looking into this a bit deeper all afternoon and think the 17-55is f2.8 is the way forward as at the moment i have nothing under the 24mm as you say but will save a bit and get a 10-22 i think in the future but only just got my 7d i cant see me going FF for quite a while if at all any time soon so think it best to get lenses that suits my body not something for maybe the future.

Other lenses i already have are nifty fifty 50mm f1.8 and 70-200L f4

I've had both lenses, and if your sticking with the 7D then the 17-55 f2.8 IS wins hands down, I'd NEVER have sold mine if it fitted the 1D
