Canon 24-85mm Vs 28-105mm

In the middle of budgeting for our company's photographic needs.

I'm looking for mid-range zooms to fit between 17-40mm and 70-300mm IS lenses: price-wise I've narrowed it down to the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 and the 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5, although judging by reviews (and the fact they'll be used on an APS-C 1.6x sensor) the 24-85mm will be the better buy. Both retail for around £250, which is about the price we want to pay for half a dozen lenses.

Any thoughts or possible alternatives? Used isn't an option - the company likes to buy new, plus getting that number of used lenses in one shot isn't practical. Probably the only realworld choice would be the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 - how's that compare aside from the faster max aperture?

I have had the 24-85 for years using it on film and digital and its a real gem that gives consistent pin sharp results and as you say that extra bit at the wide end makes a difference on a digital sensor

I've owned two copies of the 28-105mm and I think it's great for the price. It was my very first lens.
Both models are very identical:

- True USM engine (the Canon 50mm f/1.4 and many other lenses have a micro USM engine)
- Metalic bayonet
- Semi-pro construction
- Same aperture range

They are much better than those from the entry-range and it's possible to get them very cheap on the used market, although you prefer to get them brand new, which I understand, since you are buying for a company.

For my personal use I prefer the 24-85mm, since I'm more the kind of "wide-angle" guy, but your choice should depend on your company needs.

The Sigma, optically, is probably on the same level.
