Just heard that canon have announced the launch of a 24mm and a 28mm is usm f2.8 looking forward to have a look at them, long overdue I think.

just what are canon smoking?

i can't see who on earth a 24mm f2.8 IS is aimed at, i really can't.

do you really need IS with a 24mm lens? i can see the logic with 100mm or greater, but 24mm 2.8?

it can't be low light, can it? surely if you want a low light lens, you'd buy the 24 1.4?

Well it's a lot cheaper to make an f/2.8 lens with IS than an f/1.4, plus even in low light, you may not want the shallow DoF that comes with the wider aperture.

Just guessing of course :)

At £350-400 max I could see some appeal, but not this price. Why no 20mm? That is their weakest spot. 24-70, 24/1.4 and 24 TSE, 16-35 more than cover 24mm.
How is the IS useful? It will be either on tripod, or in plenty of light, or will need to stop action. 1/20s is not impossible to handhold a steady shot that wide. Video? I though the whole point was having a zoom, particularly at that aperture.

I do agree with all ur points and canons primes do need to be updated as they seem to be very old designs, the 28, 35, 50, they should all be updated with a usm motor and have a better built quality with an f1.4 and without the price tag of an L lens.

If it's got fantastic optics that ****es on the zooms (16-35, 17-40, 24-70 and 24-105) then I might be interested in the 24mm. But then I doubt it since even the 24mm L II is said to be only marginally better than those. I'd much rather they did a wider prime. At the moment there's the 28mm f/1.8 and nothing else unless you go L and cough up £1k+.

Non macro f2.8 primes just don't interest me and I can't really see the point of them at all, I could understand if they were long lenses but not these ones when f1.4/1.8's are available at the same length and quality f2.8 zooms are available too.

To each their own I suppose  Sorry to be so negative.

A large aperture design has to compromise on some aspects of optical design, I remember that wide angle large aperture primes tend towards astigmatism and spherical aberrations which more and more need expensive extra elements for correction the wider you go.

By limiting the max aperture to f/2.8 what I'm hoping is that Canon is putting out a stunning optical formula which doesn't compromise on IQ to please the wide aperture junkies. I own several wide aperture lenses like the 35/1.4L & 135/2L and while they're great fun and make popping shots wide open I can see many many situations where I'd take 3-4 stops of IS and shoot at f/2.8 instead of being forced to use a large aperture and battle a razor-thin DoF. In fact if they roll out a 35/2 IS USM you'll see me seriously considering swapping the f/1.4 for one. Very seriously.

I recall a lot of Leica users swearing by their small & pin sharp 28mm f/2.8 lenses.. even though there are f/2 and faster options around.

The prices will come down but yes they're a bit ludicrous at RRP :D But a bunch of videoheads will grab these at launch prices because they want the wide angle and IS...

The 70-300L with f/5.6 at the tele end was widely bashed and apparently currently selling well with lots of happy owners.

Main thing other than being able to stop down further is video, IS is a big help for video, makes the footage a lot smoother. If it wasn't stupid money I'd consider trading my 28 f.28 for one of them. I agree the gap should have been bigger though.

I'd love to have a 14, 20, 28, 35, 42, 50, 60, 80, all primes, all around f2 with IS, I'd rather carry all of those than my 15-85.

How come u would rather carry all the primes instead of the 15-85? I guess I just want to know all the negatives of the 15-85 tbh as I am considering it . Any idea of the price of these new primes?

Don't get me wrong the 15-85 is a beautiful lens, really sharp, excellent value for money. Primes are just on another level of quality and I love using them.

Ok but u still would recomend the 15-85 as a walk about holiday / city lens?

With these focal length lenses you're going to have to be pretty close to a subject to get razor thin DoF.

To me, lenses like this need a wide aperture to give you any control at all over DoF.

I probably am missing something here, but I just can't see myself ever buying one of these lenses when there are perfectly good, very good even, f1.4 and f1.8 options available. The only thing these seem to offer is IS but there are situations in which IS isn't going to help you, moving subjects for example... unless there's a pan mode.

I do think these are aimed at the Video crowd, as mentioned earlier IS - is really useful for video work. The optics must also be a big step up from the old 24/28mm - maybe ready for a new high MP Canon dSLR :)

I also think they will be perfect for video, Canon also mention the "near silent" IS, IS noise isn't a major issue for stills, but can be noticeable on video.

What's the price?

Wow £729 that is what I call ****ing ridiculous! It needs to be at least £400 cheaper for me to even consider it.

Canon's RRP in the UK and the street prices tend to be along way apart. The 15-85 for example has an RRP of £900 yet you get pick it up on amazon for £530 new right now.

Hi Lucky.

Have been reading your posts on lens with interest as I'm just about ready to buy a lens or two..
I know your post is 3 weeks old but have you come to any decision on the 17-55 or the 15-85.. or have you gone for something else..

I seem to be going round in circles at the moment..

Hello mate yes I am going to buy the Tamron 27-50 f/2.8 VC this weekend, I like the idea of the 15-85 but the variable aperture and the price of it is the down fall for that lens, for me at least if the 15-85 had a constant aperture like f4 or f2.8 I would have gone for it. Sold a few bits on eBay to fund most of the Tamron, including my kit lens. So tamron 17-50 f2.8 VC it is.

Hi Lucky..

Morning mate.. I've only a crap kit lens so I'm starting from scratch really and so far I've decided on the Sigma 10-20 or Tokina 11-16 and I dont mind either then a Sigma 30mm prime and then I'm stuck..
Canon 17-55 is a bit dear but I would like one.
Canon 15-85 not too sure about when on full zoom.. and the
Tamron 17-50 with lots of good reports..
So it will be one of the last three..

PS.. Glad your sorted, and good shooting.. :)

The Tokina is good but not enough zoom but it would fit in nicely with the tamron 17-50 so you would have 11-16 17-50 and they're both f2.8

I'd get the Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC and at some other point add a telephoto like a Tamron 70-300 VC as this is sharp.
Sigma is much cheaper than the Tokina too and it doesn't have too much over the sigma.
Or Sigma 10-20
Tamron 17-50
Canon 70-200 f4 L IS
The sigma 30mm f/1.4 is good but I think the tamron 17-50 f2.8 would do a nice job and I personally don't think I would use a prime half as much as I would use a fast zoom

Well I'm of to Gibralta in the morning as they have a few camera shops and I might get a deal or two, you never know..
The Sigma 10-20/Tamron 17-50 sounds good I have to say..

Cheers..
