Morning all,

I currently have a 17-40 f4 lens taht sits on my 5D2 - it is great but sometimes it fails to deliver in sharpness terms - corners of image and distant objects.

I find I generally shoot at ~ 20+mm so would the canon 24mm f1.4 be any better in these respects.

Does anyone shoot with one or is very wide angles on a full frame a bit of a compromise?

I'd be surprised if it was, marginal at best. Wide-angle low f/number primes generally suffer from lack of extreme corner sharpness just as zooms do.

They both improve a lot in the corners with stopping down - try f/8 or even f/11 for max overall sharpness. I have to say my 17-40L on a 5D2 is pretty damn good at higher f/numbers.
 
People look too close and expect the impossible. Buy the wide fast lens and enjoy it for what it can do.:)

There's plenty of reviews about and I know one person who uses the prime, and absolutely loves it. It's a very fast lens indoors.

Corner sharpness on the 17-50 @ 24mm peaks at f/11 to my eye, compared to the 24 1.4 which peaks slightly higher and earlier at f/8. They are certainly both very good and both very close. And I suspect they will both be better at longer distances than those very close range test chart shots, ie real landscape.

If it's ultimate corner sharpness you need, it's surely not worth changing for that. On the other hand, if you want really really sharp, then the 24 T&S is very impressive, and with all that tilty shifty lovelyness :) They do a 17mm version now too :thumbs:

I have a beautiful 16-35 L, and even that lens does not give me corner to corner sharpness, and the series II is one of the best lenses available... In the other corner sits the tilt shift lens, 17 or 24mm, which delivers superb imagery in every corner..., but they arrrre!! very expensive ....
