as upgrade/replacement walk around for the kit lens

Worth doing? or not enough difference in Quality ?

Is it better than the 18-55 IS ??

I've had a bit of a read on it and found it can be soft at 3.5 / 4.5 - but is very sharp when bumped up to f8 plus .. And that there's no IS...

I'm looking at getting a separate 2.8 lens for shooting low light so I'm not too worried about the softness at 3.5 ...

And I don't think at 105 the lack of IS would be much of a problem ...
(If I wanted to use full out a length of 105mm i'd swap out to the 55-250)

So as a replacement walk about lens... Is it worth it , or not?

Just looking at a improvement on the kit lens, as a walk about lens .

I use a 28-135mm as a walkabout lens and it is perfectly fine.
 
Is the 18-28mm range something you'll miss ? Do you find the 18-55 lens restrictive for your needs ?

I've used a 24-105 on a crop body and for the vast majority of occasions, it was a great focal length for me...

If you're going to get a F2.8 lens for low light shooting and have the 55-250IS, would you not be better to pool your money and buy one lens that does what you want it to do...for example, the 24-70F2.8 ?

What sort of price range do they go for ?
I like to buy pre owned from places like wex for the guarantee

And if I put my 18-55 is ef-s towards plus cash....

Is the 24-70 2.8 EF or EF-S?
Just thinking about future move to full frame ...
 
I have the Tiawan 'MACRO' lettered version of this 28-105mm lens which I've been using on a Canon 5D MkII, mainly for hobbyist studio use but also for landscapes. I find the zoom range to be especially useful on a full frame camera, it would less so on a crop frame body for me. The performance is variable but having busted the bank buying the camera body, this was a cheap and cheerful option at the time. There is significant distortion at the wide angle end, sea horizons turn out to be saucer shaped and will need rectification in Post Processing. Distortion reduces significantly as the zoom is extended to the telephoto end. The main issue for me has been that the focus is missed too often despite carrying out micro adjustments on the camera body. This lens/body combination also fails the large dark dog test, where I try to shoot my German Shepherd moving about. There is also a small amount of discernable play in the third stage of the lens which probably doesn't help focus accuract too much. I'm about to retire this lens and buy a new 24-105mm lens in it's place. My verdict would be that it is a lens with a very useful zoom range on a full frame camera but not a great buy because of the build quality and focus accuracy on my copy, even for stationary subjects.

if it fails the dark dog test, its out of the running... dogs are the majority of what I shoot.

Have you any opinion on that sigma 17-50 2.8 ?
initial readup of reviews seems good

Really depends on where you buy from - generally cheaper to buy on here

You could put a wanted add up on here and also sell your lens on here and put the cash towards a new lens - but obviously, you don't get a 6 month warranty buying on here...
