Canon 28-70 L on modern dslr

Yep, I'm getting a definite case of upgrade-itis. I currently have a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 VC on my 40D, but find that I don't shoot the wide end that often and lack a bit at the long end (now maybe I should have re-phrased that).

Ideally I'd love to buy a Canon 24-70, but even secondhand, that may be beyond my budget. Therefore I was wondering if anyone here has experience in how the older 28-70 f2.8 holds up, optically etc, when used on more modern DSLRs.

Of course, I know that my 40D is only a 10MP camera, but I'm sure this upgrade bug will eventually drive me to go for something more recent with a higher pixel density. Just curious if the optics in the 28-70 can resolve perfectly well for this too.

By all accounts it holds up very well, some report better than the newer, wider counterpart.
 
I had heard that, I was just beginning to have a few doubts after a couple of reputable dealers said it was showing its age.
 
As far as I know, Canon does not service this lens anymore.
But it's better to confirm this, cause I may be wrong.
 
Well, it is showing it's age in the fact that an example could be up to twenty years old, I personally would try to buy from a reputable used equipment dealer and therefore have some warranty.

28-70 is a very good lens. My father uses one on his 5D classic, the lens itself being ~15 years old with little sign of wear. Personally, I much prefer the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS on a crop body (I would also choose the 17-55 over the newer 24-70), but so long as you can get a nice 28-70 at a nice price there is little to worry about.

Fo ultimate IQ, the 17-55 IS and 24-70L are neck and neck, with the 28-70L a little bit behind. Both of the L's are built like tanks, but the 17-55 is merely "good to solid". The IS on the 17-55 along with f/2.8 makes it a very very flexible tool.
 
Thanks for the analysis. I have considered the 17-55, but since ultimately I'd like to go full frame, I discounted it
 
I still shoot with 28-70L. I has the 24-70L and I sold it as it wasn't that much better.
 
I have a 28-70 and use it on my current cameras (5DmkII and 1DsmkII) have also had it of 7D and a 1DmkIII, it performs very well on all the bodies I've used it on. I did borrow a 24-70 and was thinking of changing but the IQ on the new lens was no better and I decided against spending the money just to gain 4mm at the wide end.
