Hi guys,

I have seen advertised on a local listing website, a Canon 28-80 L 2.8-4.0. It sounds cracking and ideal for what I need it for, however there is some damage to the filter ring, although I s'pose putting a lens hood on it would cover all that up.

From what I can gather, it is quite an old lens - What is the quality like...? How would it work on a 50D?

Do you think it is worth £175, of should I attempt to knock him down to £160?

Dunno about the quality, all i do know that if it is a decent lens and worth the money youve just potentially alerted 1000 canon users to where they can purchase it.

Test before you buy if you can. Whilst I appreciate he says it's 'well used' I'd query how that kind of damage occurred to the filter ring. Has it been dropped?

It's quite an old design... 1989 or thereabouts. From the link you posted it looks like it's done a few miles down the road, and i'd be wary of buying without giving it a thorough test beforehand.

I've been using one on loan from a mate, that's been round the world god knows how many times on cruise ships, but is still in perfect condition. AF's a bit slow compared to modern lenses, and the bokeh's not the smoothest at 80mm. There's a bit of vignetting on my EOS-3 film camera, but nothing noticeable at all on the EOS450D's crop sensor. In short, it's a state of the art lens for 1989, but things have changed a bit in 20 years!

All these problems pale into insignificance imho compared to the fact that it's taken one almighty wallop on one side to break off that filter ring lip.

Due to the condition and age I would want to test it indeed, and hopefully with this testing I will make a decision.

I am not too worried about the cracked filter lip, because I will put a lens hood on it and it will be hardly noticeable.

Can you put a lens hood on this?

If you could remove the link Yin, that would be good.

It was probably someone on here that bought it just after you posted the origonal article.
