Canon 28-80

Hi all,

After switching to full frame and having to get rid of my Tamron 17-50, which was my go-to landscape lens, I'm left with a gaping hole in that focal length.

Until the funds materialise for the 17-40L how would I fare with a 28-80 USM?

Obviously it's no L Glass but it might scratch my landscape itch for now. Anyone have any experience of one?

If you want a very cheap really solid landscape lens get the 28-70mm f3.5-4.5 the af is a bit slow and noisy but the optical performance is brilliant which is what you want for landscape.

28mm on full frame is about the same field of view as you 17mm on a crop so you should be fine.

Have a read around it gets some great reviews. I have a 70-210mm f4 from the same era and once you get used to the clunky af it's a decent enough lens even in full frame.

Looks solidly built (metal mount etc) - just concerned incase it vignettes ridiculously or there are some other known issues with it.

The 28-80 is not the sharpest of the bunch and suffers CA too. I was in the same situation as you and opted for the 28-105mm which works a treat for me. Nice and sharp, minimal CA and good contrast.

Can't go wrong at that price and if you don't get on with it you can sell it in for pretty much exactly what you paid for it.

For dedicated landscape use you don't need big apertures and lightning quick af you need resolution and the 28-70mm f3.5-4.5 scores heavily on that count.
 
I've had a £25 bargain (NON USM) Canon 28-80mm on the end of my 40D for a while now and it's ace (For the price)

Landscapes are not my biggest area but it seems to do just fine with close-ups of the kids, inside or out.. Quick enough..

Really looking forward to this arriving.....the mrs is pleased too as she was fretting over another big purchase :)

That's the cheaper (and optically inferior) 3.5-5.6. I think Danny's lucky enough to have sourced the 3.5-4.5 which was the better model supplied on more expensive models back when it was a current lens.

Oh yeah, definitely..

Mine was nearly 2 years ago when I found it.. I actually use it quite alot..!

Ive got the cheap ebay fish eye and x2 bits and the results I get aren't the best ever, but for the price, amazing..
 
Just a little update.

The lens arrived an hour or so ago and it's spotless. However, it vignettes horribly at all focal lengths - especially 28mm (as shown). I wasn't expecting this lens to set the world alight but I was under the impression that with it being an EF lens (albeit one from the early 90's) it wouldn't vignette on FF.

Was I expecting too much for my 40 notes?

Pretty much every lens you put on a full frame camera will vignette especially wide angles shot at there biggest aperture and under the torture test conditions you've set. My tamron 28-75mm was much worse than that!

Stop taking pictures of walls stop the lens down to f8 and go and take the landscapes you got it for.

how would this lens work with my 350d? I'm guessing this would be better than cheap chinese fisheye/wide angle adapters?

Eh? A 28-70mm or 28-80mm zoom isn't a fisheye and isn't even a particularly wide angle. It will work just fine on a 350D as a short telephoto zoom - the field of view would be equivalent to a 45-112mm or 45-128mm zoom on a full frame camera. But I don't think that's what you're after. Would you care to clarify your question?

Thanks Stewart, I'm realy new to all this and still learning, I only had 18-55 with my 350D and bought a 55-22(sigma) so that's my telephoto. what other lenses would you advise?

What other lenses would I advise? None.

Learn how to use your camera and lenses. Explore what you like taking photos of. Post photos here on TP for comments and critique. If you can't get the results you want - if your photos don't look the way your mind's eye says they should look - ask here on TP. Most issues will be about technique. But if and when you find that you can't achieve something because of the limitations of your equipment, then you'll know it's time to spend money, and you'll also know what you need to spend it on.

thanks Stewart, that makes sense. I just got Scott Kelby's books for my bday. Next I got to learn my camera although it would be great if I could meet up with some local people to practice with me a little.
