Question is in the title really :)

Which would you go for based purely on IQ?

Will the 28mm be more use since I will use a crop body (30D)?

I photograph anything and everything but feel I take more wildlife and portrait shots.

Cheers guys

Dan

If it helps I love the 85mm lens on my 5D (same field of view as the 50mm on your 300D). Actually I'm not sure when I last used the 50mm lens (32mm equiv).

If it's portraits go for the 50. the 28 will be a bit wide even on a crop.

That does help yes, thank you. They seem relatively similar in IQ but I reckon there'll be an overwhelming opinion that the nifty is better. Just not sure if 85mm would be too much - I can always get closer but it's harder to move back imo. But, if I ever do need to get closer, is the 28mm IQ good enough to be cropped and expanded?

Depends what you want it for - 50mm on a crop body is more like a portrait lens, a 28mm is more like the 50mm primes that everyone used to use on film SLRs as a walkabout lens.

I keep my 50mm on most of the time and there are times that I miss the wider field of view. There's a reason that the kit lenses are usually a wider zoom with a far end of 50 or 55mm - depending on what you want to do it's probably more versatile.

I've been wondering about a 30 or 35mm instead of my nifty - or I could just do what I do at the moment and take a couple of steps backwards.

lol, seems like a question of walking forwards or backwards, but if I were processing an image I can always zoom in, yet I can't keep zooming out...
