Well, after my 50mm F1.8 has decided to break i have taken it upon myself to look at alternatives. I liked the 50mm but found it not wide enough.

With that in mind i was thinking of going with the 28mm f2.8. What are peoples views on this lens? Is there anything else that is as good or better for a little more. This lens can be had for around £160, so something close to that would be good.

If anyone has any sample images they would like to post feel free!

Thanks

Dy :-)

why did your 50mm 1.8 break, if i am not mistaken, apart from the metal mount, are these two lenses of similar quality? Optics maybe sound just dont want the same to happen again obviously depending on the reason the first one failed.

Thanks for the oppinions guys. The 50mm met a sad end by falling out of my kit bag on to laminate flooring. Sods law says it hit lens first, only from a hight of around 1foot however it was enough to make the lens part with the housing. It does still work but sometimes the lens falls out :S not ideal, the other problem is that it is not sharp.

Reason i want the 28mm is that 50 was too Zoomed in for me.

Re the price, i was watching one on ebay, and one went earlier for £128 + postage. For me there would be no point in getting it second hand as £30 more and you will get a brand new one.

What about the sigma 30mm 1.4?

It's a great lens. Not sure on price though.

Yes it is a great lens but its double the price, however i will keep an eye out for a second hand version, not sure how much they are on the second hand market

Another vote for the Sigma 30/1.4 .. and the Canon 35/2 is not that bad, although pretty dinky as well.

What is the QC on the the 30mm siggys like? only reason i ask is that i have had "issues" with sigma lenses in the past.

Just as an update, i think im going to get one of these next week. Has anyone got any sample pics with this lens?

have you considered the canon 28/1.8? Half decent build quality and over a stop faster.

I don't really see the point of a 28mm f2.8. What can it do that a quality 17/18-50mm f2.8 can't?

I'd go for the Siggy 30mm f1.4 and in fact I did but if the cost is that much of an issue I'd forget the idea of a 28mm f2.8 and save up.

Agreed. 28/2.8 is not even that sharp (see photozone.de review), so 17-50/2.8 should win outright.

ahhh ok then you guys are putting me off the 28mm. I think i will just buy another 50mm and learn to love it. Everything else is out of my price range.
