It's probably been asked before, but what is the better lens for sharpeness etc...Canon 300mm f4 or the Sigma 100-300mm f4.

Also does the auto focus work with a 2.0 extender on?

Many thanks in advance:D

9 times out of 10 the prime will be sharper than the zoom. The zoom will be more flexible.

Regarding the AF and a x2.0 T/C, it depends what your nailing the lens to. If its a Canon, it won't autofocus on anything less than a 1D series, and then AF will be slower and IQ reduced.

In that case you could use a x1.4 TC with a 50D and retain AF (making 420mm f5.6)

I use the 100-300 f4 and occassionally use a x1.4TC but since getting 50D and then a 7D I've preferred to crop rather than use the TC.

Id go for the Canon 300mm f4 is usm it is really very very sharp !

recently got rid of my 300 f4 & bought 7d with proceeds (was only backup to 300 f2.8)

to make use of x1.6crop factor...

The Canon 300mm f4 a great lens, was my main sport / aviation lens until I upgraded last year to the bigger brother. The f4 works very well with the canon 1.4x TC, but you do need the light to get the best from that combo.

Great lens, works well with the 1.4x TC but to get the best you need the light conditions.

Not used the 100-300mm f4, but a friend has taken some great images with this lens. Its fast focusing and tack sharp. Might struggle in low light like the 300mm f4 + 1.4x TC combination, but if the lights right great lens and gives you the flexibility of a zoom.

Hey cheers,

I did think about the 300 f2.8, but it is too heavy for me.

Nice photos. Thanks for the info

AF, IQ and sharpness are better with the canon, having hired it for 9 days and owned the sigma for 6 weeks

i have the 100-300 and love it. Its incredibly sharp, although it does weigh a bit. Obviously a prime will give better IQ, however you have the flexibility of 100-300mm with the Sigma
