Canon 300f2.8L non-IS anyone ?

Hi

Had a bit of an impulse buy and purchased a Canon 300f2.8L non-IS earlier; just to give it a go really !

I will not take delivery for a few weeks but was wondering whart sort of quality images I SHOULD be getting from a good copy of this lens.

Any piccies taken with this lens WITH TC attached would be particularly useful.

Look forward to hearing from anyone who uses this lens though.

Bigrob on here uses one for his son's football/rugby. Look him up on here and check a few of his shots.
 
It's an excellent lens Gary, reckoned to be one of Canon's finest.

I bought one a few years ago from a football photog and it was fantastic - abit heavy but wonderful images.

It's also a very sturdy piece of equipment. I was putting mine on a tripod - in an upstairs hide at Caerlaverock WWT - when it slipped from my grasp, fell around 5 feet onto a concrete floor, bounce down about 10 concrete steps and came to rest onj a concrete landing. I approached it carefully, fearing the worst, picked it up gently and put in it's coffin, sorry case, and took it home. There was a bit of damage to the lens/camera mount so I sent it off to Canon. A few days later an estimate for a new mount arrived for ~£105. It arrived back with the new mount, no rattles and it had been given a full service and clean. Great Lens, enjoy.

Its a stunning lens and you should get beautiful pictures from it with super bokeh. Treat it well and it will last years longer than it has already.

I have a owned the Non IS and the IS at the same time, I still own the Non IS.
Optically I couldnt tell the difference and couldnt justify the price difference. its a cracking lens and cant see myself selling it.

I'll dig out some shots and post em up over the next couple of days
 
Holy crap ! The airshow photos are stunning !

OOI, I'm not an aero-person but I have just got back from a talk I organised where a mate of mine was lecturing about the F35 JSF - nice bit of kit that.

Tobers, thanks for the reassurance. I gather the one I'm getting has recently been service (Fixation ?) so, hopefully, will cope for a bit with the TLC I tend to lavish on my lenses.

Suspect you are right.

Soon as I get the C300f2.8L, I'm going to give it a shoot out against the Siggy 120-300f2.8 os which I use a lot and which performs nicelly with decent TCs..

Cannot wait !

** Caution **

I may be wrong, but I don't think Canon now support the non-IS version, as replacement parts are no longer available - though I do see some AF motors on eBay from USA.
