Canon 300f4 plus x2III TC anyone ?

Hi, I am in the process of moving from Nikon back to Canon and was thinking of options for a lightweight walkabout kit for wildlife. There are, of course a number of 50-500 or 150-600 options available but I was wondering whether anyone here has tried the Canon 300f4 with a x2III teleconverter and whether or not anyone could post some images to show the efficacy of this set-up ? I had the Canon 300f4 some years ago, before the x2III TC was available, and thought it an excellent lens. Would love to hear whether this is a rubbish idea, or otherwise ?

What camera do you plan to get? Unless it's a 1-series, 5D III or 7D II, the 300 f/4 with a 2x extender will be manual focus only. Does that matter?
 
Hi Gary,

I have the 300 with a 1.4 Converter and use it with 5D MKIII.

Works great, IS can be a bit Clunky but hey it's the Older system of It. I can remember reading reports about the 1 and 2 times converters and overall the 1 came out Best.

Weight is Acceptable hand held for a while, in a bag it's not back ache inducing either. Of course it will be different for other people.

Some would say it's Daft, but I also use a 70-300L on a 100D, which makes a very Compact and a Hoot to use System. Alas converter cannot because the design of the lens will not allow it. I believe a Kenko converter can, though with limitations.

When I get round to it going to try the 300 with and without the Converter on the 100D and see what happens.

With the 100D, like carrying a Longer lens only as the camera weighs ounces, if that combo works out it will be another Bonus.

Hi canonbabie, thanks for the information above. I am in a dilemma as to whether to buy the 300f4 and x2TC III or the more expensive 100-400 mk II. The pseudo-macro ability of the 300f4 makes it appealing. Weight is not such an issue. I just want something as a more portable alternative to the 400f4DO which I am very happy with. I think the 70-300L will be a bit short. Looks like a fabulous lens though.

Sorry, I missed your post earlier. I will be using a 7D2. That stated, I have just noticed that the MFD of the 100-400II is less than that of the 300f4 so it should act as an ok macro-substitute and better than the 300f4.

I think that is the matter settled. I will get a 100-400II at the earliest opportunity.

Yep the 100 400 ii makes a better pseudo macro imho ;)

I had a play with a mates' 100-400II earlier and was very impressed, seemed very sharp, well put together etc....

From reviews it seems like the maximum magnification at 400mm at MFD is 0.31 which obviously increases with the use of a TC. I can live with that for the odd bit of macro that I do.
