Canon 300mm 2.8 Focussing problems

Hi,

Anyone heard of this before?

Canon 300mm 2.8 (14 years old) stopped focussing on anything over about 50 meters today. Only had it a little while and used it about 5 times without any problem.

Tried everything I can think of, the focussing limiting switches, different camera body, all the other switches on the lens. Won't even focus manually beyond 50 meters :bang:

Think it's going to have to go in for repair - anyone got any recommendations or places to avoid?

Hi David

Have you tried cleaning the contacts on the lens ? (clutching at straws really), it sounds like you've tried everything else I could think of.

With regards to repair, I don't think Canon repair the non IS anymore - I think it maybe a phone call to Canon, Lehmans, Colchester Cameras etc to see if they can repair it...

Thanks andyred - taking it into fixation tomorrow for them to have a look at it. I know Canon don't support it anymore but I'm hearing mixed messages about the availability of parts. Just hoping that it's something simple to sort out. The fact that it's focussing on shorter distances is leaving me with some hope! Fixation said they get some in that they can repair and others they can't.

I tried cleaning the contacts but only out in the field. May try this again properly today just in case.
